The stores don't seem to be selling the album all that quickly, either. Some of the posts I've seen on the list, however, indicate that she's much more popular in other places. She seems to have fallen out of Billboard's top 50, anyway. Any input on this subject, everyone? Also, I know this is a somewhat touchy subject for this list, but I can't think of anywhere else to bring it up. Anyone know what happened to Guyville? We had that epidemic of repeated posts for a while there, and then apparently the list got shut down. Is this permanent, or what? While this is definitely the best list, it's always nice to have another venue to express your opinions as well. . . I also feel that after reading that Jason sends this list to 700 people almost everyday, he can name it anything he wants to. Finally I just wanna say that anybody who is going to the San Diego and Los Angeles shows(both of which are all-ages) should e-mail me about meeting and at least saying hi or something. I am going to both shows, I cannot wait. Only 1 week left to count. First of all, I was in a situation where I could not send out any more mass emails from my account, so in addition to being unable to warn everyone about having to move the list and what the new set-up would be, I also was not in a situation where I could have contacted everyone asking for input or a vote. In order to get the list up and running in its new incarnation, I had to come up with a name quickly before it would be operational, as the name of the list would also be the posting address for the list. As I explained previously, 6'1" would not work because it was not limited to letters and hyphens only. I wasn't sure what to do about the problem, so I asked for the advice of those who were on our IRC channel, #wcse, at the time this was taking place. We agreed that six-feet-one didn't look right somehow; I had already come up with a couple of alternatives in addition to it, and asked if anyone else who was there could come up with any ideas. It was decided that support-system would be the new name of the list, and I will admit that it was what I was leaning towards. Another good suggestion that might have worked was perfect-world. Unforunately, it's too late to change the name now, but honestly, I do like it. I think it gives off a positive vibe -- always a good thing. Anyway, I hope to be moving in a few months' time, at which point, I will be switching ISPs. Hopefully I will be able to find one that is a little less picky and I'll be able to run the list manually again. If that is the case, we can return to using 6'1" if that is what the majority wishes. Right now, I'm just happy that I was able to find an alternate means of running the list rather than have it cease operation completely. I couldn't imagine not having the list at all, in any form. So, anyway, I hope you can all understand the reasoning behind the new name for the list. Jase (who is working on the daunting task of picking his ten Liz faves for David Perry's poll, and is barely able to narrow it down to ten from each album!) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Sep 1998 07:29:48 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: Bounced message [This message bounced on its way to the list because it was sent from an address that is not subscribed to the list. Surely a 12 year old need not here >a song like "Flower" or some crap like Marilyn Manson Personally (and this may not be a common thing), I got into Liz when I was 12 and a half, and Flower was my favorite song. Not even in a funny, "check-out-the-sex-in-this-guys" way. That was four years ago and I suppose I am still among the younger Phair fans. But all the friends I have ever played Liz for thought she was awesome and brilliant etc. So I don't think Liz Phair CDs should have any age-rating at all...that's totally unfair. - -Laura ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Sep 1998 08:12:26 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: Various subjects First, I know that quite a few people have posted about "Johnny Feelgood" being used in last night's episode of _Party of Five_, but has anyone else noticed that "6'1"" is currently being used in a commercial for the film _Next Stop Wonderland_? I've only caught this ad once myself, after it was mentioned to me by a couple of other people who had seen it. The song appears in the second half of the commercial, and it's just the instrumental part from the beginning until right before Liz's vocals come in. I just thought it was kind of cool to see it being used, especially since it's not one of Liz's more well-known songs (as in it was never released as a single or received airplay on commercial radio). I caught the ad on MuchMusic during a re-broadcast of the MTV Music Video Awards; if anyone else wants to catch it, MuchMusic might be your best bet. Speaking of MuchMusic, I've been meaning to post this for a while, but on the August 23 edition of _Fax_, they had a segment on Liz, which I managed to tape. It consisted of an interview Liz gave while she was in Toronto with the Lilith Fair tour and featured some footage of her performing "Polyester Bride" at one of the shows. They also played clips of the "Supernova" and "Rocket Boy" videos. All in all, the segment was rather short but still pretty interesting. Mostly Liz talked about the Lilith tour and how unaware she was of just how different her music is from that of the other Lilith performers. I hope that when Liz is in Toronto next month, MuchMusic will have her in their studios as a guest, either for an interview or to perform, or ideally both. It would be really great exposure for her. Hopefully the "Polyester Bride" video will be available for them to play by then too -- maybe they'll put it in rotation as a way of promoting her upcoming show in Toronto. Speaking of which, I will be getting my tickets today for the show and I am excited beyond belief. While it was great seeing Liz at Lilith last month, this is what I've really been looking forward to! I'd love to be able to go to at least one more show on the tour, and I still might, depending on if I can get a day or two off to travel and if I have the money to do so. Did anyone catch the MTV '1515' piece on Liz when it finally aired? If there's someone out there who managed to tape this, I would love to trade with you to get a copy. I have the aforementioned MuchMusic segment along with a lot of other Liz footage to offer in exchange. Let me know privately if you're interested. Also, while I don't always have the time to do so, I'm usually more than happy to make copies of Girlysounds or anything else anyone may be after, provided that you supply your own blank tapes and return postage. Just email me if you'd like dubs of anything at any point, and I'll let you know whether I have the time at that moment to help you out or not. While I hate to chime in on dissension I have to agree that I would not have voted for Support System either. For two reasons: It does sound like a generic self help forum but more importantly the other list names were things that Liz had associated herself with, while she disassociated herself with support systems. She was an Exile in Guyville and was standing 6'1 (instead of 5'2). In reference to a support system she sang "I don't need a support system, putting me into..." I guess I liken it to calling the previous list 5'2 (instead of 6'1)...Maybe we could call it "The This is not a support system List" in the fashion of those renegade "This is not a Fugazi T-Shirt". But after saying that, I can live with this name if necessary. Does anyone have details on Liz's shows in Chicago yet -- like when they go on sale????
