From: vjohns@acad.com Subject: Tickets and a promo video Well, I got tickets for the San Diego and L.A. show and I am ecstatically happy! Seeing Liz live two nights in a row. . .I just can't even believe it! My friend who I am going to the concerts with obtained a promo video from his friend who works at this indie record store here. I'm not sure if anyone on this list has the video or has mentioned it, but I got to watch it last night. It is called, "Liz Phair, Intro to Capitol/EMI" or something like that. The video was made so she could introduce herself to the label execs at Capitol and she says, "Hi Capitol, I'm Liz Phair and this is where I work" and she shows them the studio where she is recording WCSE. We see her warming up and singing, (not in entirety) Johnny Feelgood, Uncle Alvarez, and What Makes You Happy. Then four of her videos are at the end, Never Said, Stratford On Guy, Supernova and Jealousy. I really liked the part with her in the studio. I'm not used to seeing her talk. She goofs around and introduces Brad Wood. Valerie - ------------------------------ From: Kaufmann@IPFW.EDU (Kaufmann,Mike) Subject: Re: 6'1" Digest (09/06/98) I think the joke in California is fairly old. I've heard it mentioned much before Colors or California. ON a completely different note--I was considering the odd line in Dance of the Seven Veils about the ugly pilgrim thing and how entertainers bring may flowers. I never could quite get what the ugly pilgrim thing might be, but this is my current reading. The singer is threatening johnny with various acts of violence if he doesn't get out of the business or she'll have his head on a platter like Salome, one of history's great entertainers, did John the Baptist's. The singer, though, is probably not really like Salome at all, but envies her power to mesmerize. I think as whitechocolatespacegg confirms Liz is not much like the characters she sings about in her songs--but she sometimes wishes she could be. In other words, the singer in Seven Veils envies such Salome-like entertainers, but feels she's closer to the less appealing pilgrim thing she knows all too well. Despite the Pilgrims well-known transportation, it's these entertainers who bring may flowers (i.e., get all the guys and glory). Consequently, the song is the singer's dream of what it would be like to have this hypnotic appeal and power to revenge herself on a lover who has spurned her for these entertainers. >From: ---becky--- >Subject: californ-eye-aye > ><<--California - Juv (I love this corny joke, and >when she is telling the joke, she sort of has a mock >Brooklyn accent and sort of sounds like the Karate >Kid or something. I WAS FLYING INTO CHICAGO AT NIGHT WATCHING THE LAKE TURN THE SKY INTO BLUE GREEN SMOKE.... It was wicked, I even had EIG with me and I was listening to it on my discman. Everything in the song was just like it was out the window and in the cabin. That song is truly great, her imagery is so wonderful. I must say that since the release of 'the egg', I've had a Liz Phair 'phairathon' on my CD player. I can't get enough of the new album. I guess four years of not hearing good ol' Liz will do that to a man. I wanted to let everyone know that I found out that the Japanese import of the new album contains "Hurricane Cindy" as a bonus track. To those of you who don't know, "Hurricane Cindy" was/is a song that Liz only performs during her concerts and it has yet to make its way to a commercial release - until now anyway. Just thought I'd let everyone know. And since everyone is posting their favorite Liz songs, I shall too. Liz played last night in Austin, in an outdoor venue, which was absolutely packed. I was hoping to get there before 7, but didn't, so there were already people huddled near the front of the stage, but luckily I got a place right up front left (in front of the speakers!). Even though I got there after 7 when doors opened, it seemed like we waited forever! i was so excited, every minute probably seemed like an hour. Finally the opening band, The Damnations came on. THey rocked, but after a few songs I was like "Ok, where's Liz!?" Finally she came on, playing Explain it to Me. After that, she announced, "Now I'm about to rock yer asses off." and broke into 6'1"! As best as I can remember, she played: Whitechocolatespaceegg Never Said Dance of the Seven Veils Flower Perfect World Cinco de Mayo Supernova Divorce Song Johnnie Feelgood Polyester Bride For the encore she played something(?) and then She closed with Fuck and Run. I'm sure she played some other songs, but I'm not thinking too clearly right now. I asked several people during the night if they were on the 6'1" mailing list, but no luck. Afterwards I waited around and strolled into the dressing room, and after waiting for some long-winded girls to finish talking with her, she signed a poster that a guy gave to me backstage, that he had made himself. Liz was telling this story about some assholes who had been mean to her backstage after a show in Edinburg or something, and later she found out that these same guys beat an old man to death on the floor of a bar. i should go to class. From: "Cox, Rebekah" Subject: My BIG TALL MAN theory From reading countless postings for ye-ole digest it became quite clear that few liked "Big Tall Man," but after listening to the song the other day I have formed a theory about why I should care about the big tall man who's a complicated communicator.... I think Big Tall Man = Big Tall Dick. Explaination: She's describing a man doing "man" things; ie, drag racing, mowing the lawn and tires. Then the chorus breaks out with, "winning, spinning... it feels good, like relieving a headache" could that be symbolic of an orgasm? I think it'd be interesting to know if anyone else sees this relationship, or if I'm taking too many liberties. rebekah-cox@loki.augustana.edu - ------------------------------ From: "Anissa Vance" Please allow me to start with a "it's been a long time since I've posted" sentence, but it has. Last time I posted was when I went to see the Phair one at a studio in Rockville, Maryland with 25 other very fortunate people, some of who are on this list ! (Hi ya'll) Anyway, two quick questions, first - I got the picture of me and Liz together, we're slinging our arms around each other and wearing huge "colgate" smiles... like we were old friends. I still feel soooo weird when I look at the picture, I'm like okay, there's me, and there's liz, there's me, there's liz... I don't know jack sh*t about legal stuff or publishing stuff, but I would love to scan the picture for you guys, that is if you were interested in seeing it. Do I need permission for this? (again, sorry for being an idiot) AND just wanted to check to see if anyone has heard anything more about the 10/5 date in Washington, DC at the 9:30 club.
