[Jason Long ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Fri, 11 Sep 1998 00:46:55 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: 6'1" List Has Moved! Hey everyone, I imagine that you are all quite confused as to why you are receiving this, so here's an explanation. My ISP contacted me yesterday to let me know that I could no longer run the 6'1" Mailing List from my account, as the amount of mail I was sending was overburdening their mail server. Rather than cease operation of the completely, I have tried to search for an alternative. I tried sending a digest out from my hotmail account, only to encounter numerous problems in doing so, as there was a limitation on the amount of mail I could send and the number of recipients. Luckily, smoe.org have been extremely gracious and have agreed to host the list on their server. This will be our new home, and hopefully the transition to this new format will be a smooth one. I've added all of the 6'1" list members to the digest version of this list, as that is what we're all accustomed to, although you can receive all of the posts individually if you wish. Let me know if you'd like to switch and I can send you the instructions on how to do so. I'm really sorry that I could offer some advance warning of this happening, but I was told that I could not send out any more mass emails from my account. Also, I'm not abandoning the list by any means by having moved it to an automated server. I will still be active in its operation, and will step in whenever the need arises. Also, one thing you may have noticed is the new name of the list. To operate it on this server, I had to choose a name for the list that only contained letters and hypens. Therefore, 6'1" was out, and after talking to a couple of list members about this and asking for suggestions, we decided to rename the list Support System. There's a million things I know I'm forgetting to say in this message that I want to, but I will write more when I think of them. For now, I'd like to get this sent out to straighten out any confusion anyone may be having. Finally, any posts that I have received at this account for the old list since I sent the last digest out (not counting the hotmail one) will appear on this list as soon as I get a chance to forward them. Jase ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 11 Sep 1998 01:04:46 -0400 From: Jason Long Subject: A couple of other things... I just thought I'd point out that the posting passwords for the old list are no longer necessary, so you don't need to worry about including those now. Also, I thought this would have went through to everyone when I add you all to the new list, but I don't think it did, so here's the welcome message for the list. Please keep this for future reference. [Last updated on: Thu Sep 10 23:53:07 1998] Welcome to Support System! *Please keep this message for future reference* Thank you for your interest in this mailing list. Please take the time to read the following, and be sure to let me know if you have any questions. I first started this list in late 1996 as a forum to discuss the life and music of Liz Phair and related topics. The list was originally named 6'1", and I ran it manually until September 1998, when smoe.org graciously allowed me to host it on their server. Although the list started with a small group of subscribers, we are currently around 700 members strong. While this list is unmoderated, I hope that all subscribers will observe and respect the following guidelines, as they will maximize everyone's enjoyment of the list. 1. Do not send any binaries to the list. If you have a file you would like to share with everyone, let me know and I can post it on the web so any interested parties can check it out if they choose to. 2. Please keep your subject lines relevant to the content of your posts. 3. Please do not send any encoded or HTML-style mail to the list. You may be doing this but are unaware of it, especially if you use a mailer built into a web browser. Please make sure your preferences have these options set to 'off.' 4. Please keep quoting to a minimum when responding to posts. Just quote the relevant parts you are responding to, instead of the entire message. Also, please do quote enough to give everyone an idea of what it is you are replying to. 5. Flames are not encouraged and have no place on the list. If I see any messages like this, I will ask that the authors of such posts take the matter to private email to save it from cluttering up and being disruptive to the list. Feel free to disagree with or offer constructive criticism regarding anthing that has been posted, but do keep it friendly. There is no need for flames or personal attacks. SUBSCRIPTION INFO: To subscribe to Support System, send a message to and in the body of the message write "subscribe support-system." You will then receive a confirmation email that you must reply to as soon as possible. Once you have, you will then be added to the list. The list is also available in digest format, which may be more enjoyable for those who find receiving each post individually to be overwhelming. As a digest subscriber, you will receive a single email message once a day (or greater, depending on list traffic) which compiles a number of postings into an individual message. To switch to the digest version of the list, send an email to with the following two lines in the body of the message: unsubscribe support-system subscribe support-system-digest If you'd ever like to unsubscribe from the list completely, send an email to with "unsubscribe support-system" or "unsubscribe support-system-digest" in the body of the message, depending on which format of the list you are a member of. POSTING PROCEDURES: To post a message to the list, please send it to , whether you are on the individual mail or digest version of the list. This will send your message to all of the subscribers to the list. The mailing list does have a website, which is located at . Many articles, reviews, lyrics, news, and a discography can be found there, as well as links to a number of other Liz Phair sites. If you have any questions, comments, or require any assistance, please feel free to contact me at , and I will do whatever I can. I'm always here to help. I sincerely hope that you will enjoy the list.
