I thought the second episode was better than the first. I liked the third episode shown this week, too. It's very interesting to compare this with "Joan of Arcadia." Both have young female characters who reluctantly obey commands from beyond. Joan knows her commands come from God -- or at least that's who he/she says he/she is. Jaye of Wonderfalls isn't quite sure where her voices come from. For those of you watching Wonderfalls, do you find Jaye an appealing character? Her family is portrayed in a whacky, somewhat unsympathetic manner, but as a middle-aged person, I see their point: here is a college-educated woman living in a trailor and working in a tourist store, spending her free time and cash drinking. Her family is perfectly justified in being concerned about her. I find Jaye a little too snarky. I also wonder why she continues to hang on to the things that talk to her if they drive her crazy. She certainly should have returned the brass monkey to the therapist she stole it from. I can see her taking the wax lion because it was defective -- no one would want it. Still, if I had objects that were supposed to be inanimate keeping me up nights, I sure wouldn't keep them around! Although I liked the second one a little better than the first, I don't find Jaye very sympathetic and everyone in the show is drawn too stridently for my taste--the family all seem to caricatures rather than characters--kind of like a toned down Malcom in the Middle. It feels as if it's trying too hard to be quirky and it's hard to take the characters seriously when the show itself doesn't seem to. I think the treatment of religion on Joan of Arcadia is much more intelligent and sophisticated--at least more so than the Wonderfalls I watched with the wacko nun (which did have some very funny moments, I'll admit.) I like the writing on JoA--a nice balance of comedy and drama with no (so far) simplistic solutions to real problems, and I like the realism of the family dynamics. But what I love most about JofA is Joan's combination of vulnerability and courage--which has reminded me from the first of Buffy. Of course, ymmv. :) Sue - ---------------------- www.susankroupa.com - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Berni Phillips" To: > > I thought the second episode was better than the first. I've only had time to watch the pilot so far, but I have to say I didn't find her appealing at first. Then I realized she reminded me of Daria (from the brilliant MTV animated show of the same name), and I suddenly liked her a lot better. I think Jaye is who Daria could very well have turned into once she was a couple years out of college. >I also wonder why she continues to hang on to the things that talk to her if >they drive her crazy. She certainly should have returned the brass monkey >to the therapist she stole it from. I can see her taking the wax lion >because it was defective -- no one would want it. Still, if I had objects >that were supposed to be inanimate keeping me up nights, I sure wouldn't >keep them around! ... but if they were the only "people" talking to you like you matter, wouldn't you want to keep them around? The people she interacts with at work regard her with no more respect than a bug, and she doesn't get much support from her family. She's got that friend at the bar and now the bartender guy, but when she goes home she's got nothing but herself. If some inanimate objects want to talk to her she may be freaked out by it, but at least they're keeping her company. =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org =============================================== ------------------------------ End of stillpt-digest V6 #18 ****************************
