So far, the show that seems to me the closest to BUFFY in spirit if not in substance is not TRUE CALLING or ANGEL but JOAN OF ARCADIA. I love Joan, the main character, who, like BUFFY, is not in the popular crowd in school and also like BUFFY is regularly called upon to do things she doesn't want to do by a higher power. I think "God" is handled nicely without any kind of religion-specific trappings (well, maybe some) and religious questions/issues are handled in a sophisticated way (iow, it is NOT TOUCHED BY AN ANGEL.) Unlike BUFFY, Joan has both parents at home and both love her and are good parents but this doesn't prevent plenty of family friction. I worried at first that with the father being a cop the show would turn into a crime-a-week-gets-solved due to Joan's interaction with God, but that hasn't happened. Mostly, it's Joan's vulnerability and persistance in trying to do the right thing that really remind me of Buffy. I wish I had thought to post this last week as they re-ran the premiere on Friday. Maybe the next few weeks will also be reruns. Sue ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 3 Dec 2003 22:14:59 -0800 From: "marty" Subject: Re: Best BUFFY replacement? I quite agree. I must confess I am a bit squigged when it comes to religion on TV, but this show is handling it very well. I also have to confess that when I see Miss Tamblyn, I remember lusting after her dad.
