I thought that was pretty interesting because none of the other new vampires we've seen had any feelings for their family or friends after becoming vampires. Is it an indication of how very sentimental William was that he could still care about his mother? And how does Joseph Campbell's "sentimentality is an echo of violence" and Peter Straub's (speaking through character Lamont Cranston in MYSTERY) "sentimentality is a mask for violence" fit in--or does it? I had always thought that William became so very violent as Spike because he'd been so very sentimental as William. The book description: "How can Buffy's religious symbolism be squared with creator Joss Whedon's professed atheism? Is Buffy truly a Kierkegaardian knight of faith? Do Faith's corruption and return to the good life demonstrate Platonic eudaimonism? Or do they illustrate the flaws in Nietzsche's superman concept? What does the show's treatment of vampires, demons, and other entities say about ethical attitudes toward nonhumans? These are some of the questions asked and answered in this lively collection of essays that link classical philosophy to the long-running series Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Buffy's status as the leading vehicle for exploring the evil underlying everyday life has made it ripe for the kind of witty, penetrating philosophical analysis this book delivers -- fully disintering the intellectual issues that underlie this cult favorite." Sounds fascinating!! =============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth =============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Vienna Teng, 3/29-30 =============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Mar 2003 18:47:17 -0800 (PST) From: Todd Huff Subject: Re: b/lies... > I thought that was pretty interesting because none > of the other new > vampires we've seen had any feelings for their > family or friends after > becoming vampires. > OTOH, I think it has been implied. I would be very surprised if, for instance, Vampire Willow from "The Gift" was not the sire of Xander from the same episode. I mean, who else cared about him enough to want to make him immortal? Somebody (Angel?) once said that vampires were usually pretty choosy about who they sired, but we've seen any number of geeky or bookworm types. I think the series has been at least a little inconsistent. . Yahoo!
