Keller" Subject: a/release Faith! Faith! Faith! Faith! Faith! Faith! Faith! (Repeat until screen is full, program. Points for ref ID.) Enough spoiler space? I'm actually going to start with my one real gripe with the episode: simply having Faith break out of jail was really lame. (Another lame thing I haven't mentioned, from earlier: the sun is only blocked out =in Los Angeles?????= Please.) There have been several semi-canonical (and many non-canonical) versions of Faith getting out of jail, and nearly all of them are more imaginative than this. In one of the novels, Christopher Golden's =The Wisdom of War= (which has a really fine Buffy-meets-Faith-again scene), Quentin Travers gets Faith out of jail because Buffy isn't cooperating; in one of the comics, Angel gets a judge out of bed, who, because she owes Angel a favor, gets Faith remanded to Angel's custody (and off to Sunnydale they go). Here, in an action-movie cliche, Faith simply breaks the glass (and then jumps out a window, Wesley in tow)? So she's going to be on the lam the whole time she's out? I ask you. (The prison fight is a staple of Faith stories outside the canon, too, incidentally. This canonical one was pretty well done.) Other than that...the sheer pleasure of having Faith back in the mix lived up to my high expectations, thank you very much. I haven't been in the habit of re-watching =Angel= episodes very often, but this one I rewound and watched the Faith scenes over again right away. There were other good things in the episode: the complication of what Cordelia is up to is making double-reading scenes where she's with the rest of the crew very interesting; and the scenes with Wesley and Lilah's "ghost" were very well done. But, Faith. I was happy to see her being her truculent and sarcastic self, most of the time, but with just a few flashes of the redemption-seeking Faith that is now a part of her personality. Well-done scenes with Wesley (especially the moment where it sinks in with her that Angel is Angelus again). And of =course= she would waltz in (Conner's verb) all Buffy-like and take over the field-generalship of the Angelus hunt. And of course (but here's that double reading thing I was mentioning) Cordelia would have something cutting to say, with Faith mouthing her right back. And it figures that Fred would find her daunting, and that she'd meet with Gunn's approval. But the =most= interesting part was Faith and Conner. Pretty obviously Faith is to Conner as Buffy was to Faith...but note how Faith's solution to the problem was more direct--and more effective. (And how hilarious is it that Conner ended up =liking= it!) Gonna be interesting when the truth comes out that it wasn't Faith who did in the Beast (who died very much like in Angel's fantasy, right?). Very Buffy-like move of Faith to break the window and let the sunshine in (=Hair= flashback, there). (Though of course Buffy's similar move in "The Harvest" was a fakeout.) Already looking forward to more Faith and Angelus interplay. So I'm guessing that the Beast is the father, yes? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Mar 2003 21:36:20 -0800 (PST) From: Todd Huff Subject: Re: a/release - --- "Donald G. Well, it would tend to complicate things in Sunnydale otherwise. >There have been several > semi-canonical (and many > non-canonical) versions of Faith getting out of > jail, and nearly all of > them are more imaginative than this. So was the ghost in Wes's head or was the First paying a visit to L.A.? Very ironic if so. If she hadn't talked about redemption would Wes have thought about Faith? > > But, Faith. I think she's grown up. Angelus is nobody's tool, as he reminded us all of tonight. I must wonder, though, just why the Beast made that dagger at all? Seems rather foolish. > So I'm guessing that the Beast is the father, yes? All signs point to yes. I'm wondering if Angelus' call to Dawn will show up on Buffy in a few weeks. I think it will. .
