Keller" Subject: f/further A few more remarks about =Firefly=. Yes, the "crazy" girl is psychic: at the end of the episode (as I alluded to) she was chanting to herself, and it turned out to be a clue about someone chasing her (very much like the chanting dream-girl at the beginning of "Hush"). One reviewer compared =Firefly= very closely to =Gunsmoke=, and I realized that I remembered very well when =Gunsmoke= was on (for nearly 20 years, as I remember), and when the Western was a common TV genre. That hasn't been true for a long time now, which may be why some other people feel like the setup is fresher than I do. And another way of looking at it: the feel of the show is as if Joss Whedon were saying, "If I were Gene Roddenberry (or George Lucas), this is how =I= would do it." Which doesn't interest me much. I'm also a little disturbed by the fact that the script seems to be confused about the difference between a solar system and a galaxy. But I'm going to keep watching. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Sep 2002 13:03:25 -0700 From: "Marta Grabien" Subject: Re: f/further > I'm also a little disturbed by the fact that the script seems to be > confused about the difference between a solar system and a galaxy. I still think there is the heavy hand of Fox in this. I bet Joss and Tim are privately snarling. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 22 Sep 2002 16:01:26 -0700 From: "Berni Phillips" Subject: Re: f/1st imp. I just hope they don't keep showing stupid baseball games that make it start late all season. That's a wonderful way to sink a show, and it was certainly successful with "Dark Angel." Alas, it is baseball season and the show is on the same network as the Giants. Could be worse, the Giants could make the playoffs. Hi, Just watched _Firefly_ -- I find it a very promising start, though I do wish the suits at FOX didn't have their heads firmly lodged in their posteriors and had allowed the original pilot to stand. One of the criticisms I've seen elsewhere about the episode is that it just plops you down in the middle of the story with no idea what's going on. While I'm all for a certain measure of thought being required of an audience, I agree that it would've been nice to have a bit more setup. Like Marty said, Joss and Tim Minear are probably snarling, indeed. Todd wondered: >Anybody see ratings yet? Not yet ... those will probably be out tomorrow. Marty inquired: >With Tim Minear involved with the script, that 'crazy' girl is a set up to >something that will be ongoing. Think she is a psychic? The _Firefly_ site states that she does indeed have some psychic powers. I like that an ongoing story was set up for her at the end of the episode. Don commented: >And another way of looking at it: the feel of the show is as if Joss >Whedon were saying, "If I were Gene Roddenberry (or George Lucas), this is >how =I= would do it." Which doesn't interest me much. I think that is exactly what Joss is saying -- and I think if anyone can do a "space western" right, it's Joss. I'm interested to see how he'll do it - -- at least for as long as FOX lets him. As I said before, everything points to FOX being up to its old tricks when it comes to trying to stop a new show dead in its tracks. >Alas, it is baseball season and the show is on the same network as the >Giants. Could be worse, the Giants could make the playoffs. (g) It looks like they are going to make the playoffs -- but in that case, FOX's entire schedule will be pre-empted, not just certain local markets. The playoffs are going to be broadcast nationwide. ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Annie Gallup, Saturday, 9/28 at 8 pm ============================================== ------------------------------ End of stillpt-digest V4 #137 *****************************
