I have to say I'm not adoring =Firefly= so far. But I may just be being resistant. 1) I'm not all that fond of outerspace adventure (serious =Star Wars= heretic here) 2) I'm not all that fond of Westerns, =especially= when they're pretending to be outerspace adventure 3) while I like caper plots just fine, it's not like it hasn't been done. So background and events seemed just a =little= tired to me. Plus, I was missing about a third of the dialogue. (Was there a lot of weird futuristic slang?) I =did= like the group of characters, and some of the dialog, and I liked the juxtaposition of the very last two bits. I taped it, and might watch it again, and I'll certainly keep watching subsequent episodes. It should be noted that I wasn't that big a fan of vampire movies/shows when =Buffy= started, either...but I remember liking the premiere better than I liked this one. More later. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Sep 2002 19:36:24 -0700 From: "Marta Grabien" Subject: Re: f/1st imp. > I have to say I'm not adoring =Firefly= so far. It starts in about 20 minutes here. Got panned by the critics. I am holding onto the thought that the network forced this episode before the one Joss had designed as the first one. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 20 Sep 2002 20:06:46 -0700 From: "Marta Grabien" Subject: Re: f/1st imp. > I taped it, and might watch it again, and I'll certainly keep watching > subsequent episodes. I may have to ask for a loan of the tape. There seems to be a baseball game on, in the 8th inning. What a thing to do to a premire episode. And so did we, for the most part, especially taking into account that it was a last-minute, standard-length episode that managed to tell a story *and* do the necessary series-intro stuff. Some of the opening scene was in Japanese, I think. ------------------------------ End of stillpt-digest V4 #135 *****************************
