Berni ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Sep 2002 22:13:50 -0400 (EDT) From: "Donald G. Keller" Subject: b/lasts&firsts Summer surprised us (to briefly quote T.S. Eliot, who did not continue) by passing so swiftly: the new TV season is upon us, some shows having started already. Let's not forget that Joss Whedon's new series, =Firefly=, starts this Friday. I haven't figured out just when =Angel= premieres. But it's only one week, now, until the =Buffy= season premiere. I've read the =TV Guide= synopsis and seen the preview (on tonight's rerun of last season's finale), and neither tell us much we hadn't heard already, so I'm going to put that to one side. I hadn't intended to watch the reruns (I have them on tape, after all), but I did watch part of last week's two-episode serving and tonight's single episode to wrap up. If you remember, the last three episodes of the season (plus the last scene of the immediately-previous episode) form essentially one three-part arc (Tara's death and Willow's revenge), which on first broadcast were divided up one episode followed by two; so this different division =directly= followed Willow's "One down..." with the episode "Two to Go," and placing the one-week adjournment immediately after Giles' surprise return. Which, to me, is possibly an even more effective way to present the sequence. A couple interesting things I noticed this time around that I didn't remember noticing on first viewing: 1) Willow going from Faith-in-"Graduation Day" (dressed in black, mouthing off to Buffy before fighting her) to Faith-in-"Five By Five" (weeping hard in Xander's arms). I suspect we might find a lot of interesting pattern-matching if we take Angel in the 2nd season, Faith in the 3rd season, and Willow in the 6th season and compare and contrast. 2) The pairing-off of characters in the latter part of the episode was strikingly similar to that in the amnesia part of "Tabula Rasa": Giles and Anya at the magic shop and Willow and Xander together ("Maybe =we='re going out"). Also Dawn and Buffy, for that matter, being sisterly together. I didn't really need to watch that part of "Tabula Rasa" again, but I did anyway. Remember "Joan"'s comment to "Randy"? "A vampire with a soul? Oh my god, how lame is =that="? Not merely amusing now, is it? So maybe, in their amnesia, the various characters were acting out latent tendencies that have predictive value... Or not, of course. We'll start to see next week. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 Sep 2002 19:21:56 -0700 (PDT) From: Todd Huff Subject: Re: b/lasts&firsts > I haven't figured out just when =Angel= premieres.
