Keller" Subject: b/faith math Now that we have the truly fab news that Faith will return, let's do some informal math to see what this might mean: First off, the =last= time she returned was the two episodes during =Buffy='s 4th season and two on =Angel= later that same season, four extremely rich episodes; so this new batch of =eight= episodes will be, obviously, twice as much. Duh. Which is enough to make one's mouth water right there. But let's look at Faith's first stint on the show, during the =Buffy= 3rd season. Here are the episodes she appeared in, grouped and asterisked for reasons I'll explain immediately after: Faith, Hope and Trick (3003, in the notation from the book I'm in) Beauty and the Beasts (3004)* Homecoming (3005)* Revelations (3007) Amends (3010)* The Zeppo (3013)* Bad Girls (3014) Consequences (3015) Dopplegangland (3016)* Enemies (3017) Choices (3019) Graduation Day I (3021) Graduation Day II (3022)* That's a total of thirteen episodes (more than half a season); however, the episodes with asterisks are ones in which she is a peripheral rather than a central character. Typically she only has two or three scenes in such episodes: for example, in "Beauty and the Beasts" (which I just looked at again yesterday), she has three scenes: in the library, shooting Oz with the dartgun, and the scene discussing "men are beasts" with Buffy, only the last of which is substantial. Similar remarks apply to the other asterisked episodes; in "The Zeppo" she has a brief appearance in the teaser plus her scene with Xander (which looms large, admittedly); in "Dopplegangland" she has the scene after she was running with Wesley, and then with the Mayor in her new apartment. And so on. The surprising one is "Graduation Day II"; but remember that, apart from the two brief scenes where she's lying in a coma, her only scene is the dream sequence with Buffy (which, again, looms really large). As for "Amends," I'm still convinced she was written into a script that was at least conceptually complete without her; it's the one episode, arguably, you could edit her out of completely without changing much. Groupings. The rumor I've heard is that they originally signed Eliza Dushku for only for a few episodes (five?), and my best guess is that her original arc would have been over after "Revelations" (would she have skipped town thereafter?); but then they decided to make her a villain, which led to the later episodes she's in. So there really are two different Faith arcs in the season, with the obviously isolated "Amends" in between. What we're left with, then, is two groups of episodes: two-plus-cameos earlier in the season, five-plus-cameos later in the season. Now given that it's highly unlikely that they've re-signed Eliza Dushku to play subsidiary roles, it seems to me that this pattern is very similar to the three =Angel= episodes plus five =Buffy= episodes that has been announced for the coming season. Meaning, when we add it up after the season, it =may= turn out that we get as much screen time from Faith this season as we did during the 3rd season. Now =that's= mouthwatering. Footnote: I'm guessing that, since Faith is still in jail in Los Angeles, the three =Angel= episodes will precede the five =Buffy= episodes. But that assumes a lot, of course. I'm also assuming that, given that Eliza Dushku (according to what she said on Letterman) is finishing up a movie in Toronto, and the =Buffy= and =Angel= seasons are probably starting to film already, we probably won't see Faith until a little ways into the season. It'll give us something to look forward to, for sure. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 01 Sep 2002 12:09:47 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: b/faith math Hi, Spoilerish speculation follows... Yum. :) >Footnote: I'm guessing that, since Faith is still in jail in Los Angeles, >the three =Angel= episodes will precede the five =Buffy= episodes. >But that assumes a lot, of course. The Hollywood Reporter article stated that she has been signed for the final five episodes of _Buffy_'s season, which would indicate that she would indeed be in _Angel_ first. But there has been no confirmation as to that. ============================================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ============================================== Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://muzak.smoe.org NEXT UP: Annie Gallup, Saturday, 9/28 at 8 pm ============================================== ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 1 Sep 2002 10:58:38 -0700 (PDT) From: Todd Huff Subject: Re: b/faith math > Footnote: I'm guessing that, since Faith is still in > jail in Los Angeles, > the three =Angel= episodes will precede the five > =Buffy= episodes. > But that assumes a lot, of course. > That was my assumption. If she is indeed "good" now, I still think it will take Angel's urging to get her to go back to Sunnydale. Yahoo!
