According to one interview I read, Joss had been carrying the Angel-goes-bad story line around inside his head for ten years. As I watch reruns of early episodes I see so many references to things that don't happen for seasons. He can rearrange stuff to fit circumstances, and does. The primary story arc is locked in tho.
