With Spike's knowledge of the demonic underworld, he actually could be quite an asset with a bit of an attitude adjustment. Remember, he spoke the language of the type of demon that Ethan Rayne turned Giles into? The watcher in charge of the slayer is the primary field agent, but there is (or should be!) a whole support network, both watchers in the council and others in the field in various parts of the world. Can't you imagine the great scenes, bringing ASH back as a guest once or twice, trying to get Spike to act like a proper watcher?
