I remember Damon Knight from Genie too - quite a character, and always entertaining to read - as well as from his fiction, some of which was outstanding stuff. At the very very tag end of Genie, when some of us were staying online just so that we could be there at the moment the plug was actually pulled (I was one of them), several comments were made about how much this reminded us of the end of Damon's novel _Why Do Birds_ ... Memorials also for R.A. Lafferty, never on GEnie but an author of SF just as distinctive and even stranger, who died after a long illness a couple weeks ago. I wonder who at NPR has been hanging out on sff.net... They need hardly hang out on sff.net to know Patrick. He was the editor of Damon's last two novels, of course; and beyond that, he is now really the leading editor in the SF biz, and has been for several years - partly through effective self-promotion, to be sure, but that wouldn't have helped were it not also for more important factors, like the strength of Tor and his own sheer talent. (He's also often a pompous blowhard, but so are many other Big Name Pros.) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Apr 2002 10:17:14 -0700 From: "Marta Grabien" Subject: Re: Genie is really dead now... > Memorials also for R.A. Damn, I hadn't heard about this. He was a fun guy. I got to work with him a bit 25 (yikes!) years ago when we coerced him into doing an article for our fanzine. - -- | jzitt@metatronpress.com http://www.josephzitt.com/ | | http://www.metatronpress.com/jzitt/ http://www.mp3.com/josephzitt/ | | == New book: Surprise Me with Beauty: the Music of Human Systems == | | Comma / Gray Code Silence: the John Cage Discussion List | ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 18 Apr 2002 18:41:37 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: Genie is really dead now... Ah ha! I knew your name sounded familiar. Not that he talks about you. (off subject) I will be at Baycon for a few days with Stephanie Mercier. If you two will be there, be sure to say hi. ------------------------------ End of stillpt-digest V4 #52 ****************************
