Keller" Subject: new members? etc. I've been especially busy this past week (80 boxes of books crammed into my apartment that weren't there before--no more storage space!), and in fact still haven't watched last Monday's =Angel= (I worked that evening). Thus my silence once again. I've got no problems with new members who want to play--I second Meredith's suggestion that they have a look at the archives so they know what they're getting into. Candidly, though I'm aware there's work to be done comparing =Buffy= to the lists of hero-characteristics in such analysts as Joseph Campbell, Lord Raglan, Otto Rank, etc. (I've got a swell recent book published by Johns Hopkins, =The Epic Hero= by Dean A. Miller), I've done very little of that work. So I'm very curious to see what other people have come up with. A few remarks, while I'm here, on last Tuesday's =Buffy= episode. Quick poll: do we like Mrs. Finn or not? I was pretty happy with the episode on the whole, though there were two major sloppinesses: how come Riley had time to comment on Buffy's uniform, and her hair, but didn't have time to brief her (one sentence: "We're tracking the creature, not trying to kill it") on the mission? And the two scenes with Xander and Anya (in the car, in the bathroom) were too few to constitute a subplot, and therefore were two scenes too many. As for Buffy's little speech in the last scene: that accords very much with my analysis of her attitude towards Spike (especially the "using" part). As for her calling him "William," I think it was less to be cruel (though I'm sure she was aware how cutting it would seem) than as a "pay attention" strategy: acknowledging him as the human being he was, and that even if he =doesn't= have tender feelings any more, maybe he ought to. (That's a bit tangled. Maybe I'll have a longer try at it later.) So is Buffy really done with Spike? Maybe. Maybe not. It's only fair to point out that parallels suggest otherwise: that scene, for longtime viewers, is strikingly similar to the final scenes of "Lovers Walk" and "Enemies" (both 3rd season), in each of which Buffy came to Angel and said she was walking away from their relationship. (But not for long, in either case.) Nevertheless, my best guess is that Buffy is going to make a strong effort to emulate Willow's strength and stay away from Spike. I watched the rerun of "The Freshman" (4th season opener) today on UPN, and was thoroughly startled when Buffy, joking about her mother getting the bill for her schoolbooks, says, "I hope it's a =funny= aneurysm." !!! That's a Joss Whedon script, and don't think for a minute he didn't already know what Joyce's ultimate fate was... More sooner, I keep vowing. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 3 Mar 2002 22:39:48 -0800 From: "Susan Kroupa" Subject: Re: new members? etc. I liked her. And I liked the ep quite a bit, sloppiness aside (hey, it wasn't as lame, to me as the hamburger monster) because we finally see Buffy growing up a bit.
