<Riley was pretty strung out there for a while, and that was a cause of

I guess I thought it went without saying that Riley has clearly gotten
his act together -- while Buffy, I believe, is just beginning to.
Still, I wonder how Riley would have reacted has she managed to tell him
what she started to -- that she had tried to stop his leaving a year
earlier, without success.  After all, how own wife says it took him "a
year" to get over Buffy, and they've already been married four months.
So perhaps he married because he needed someone's unconditional love to
sustain =him=, just as Buffy let herself be seduced by Spike for the
same reason. :)

<Unfortunately, the impact of her leaving him at the end is lessened by
the
<number of times she's done something similar, especially at the ends of
<episodes.

Indeed.  And next week's preview indicates he shows up at Xander's
wedding, so I'm eager to see how Buffy handles =that=.  Though it looks
as though the ep is going to be played largely for laughs.

The significant part is that Riley got his act together _after leaving
Buffy_.  Had she caught him in time and he stayed, I suspect his
personality wouldn't have matured as much as it has, and not just because
of whatever Sam has done for him.  Riley in his later Buffy days was in
pretty bad shape.

Of course Spike will be there.  Spike's theme song (apologies to Rodgers &
Hammerstein) is "I'm just a vamp who can't hear 'No'".  You think the
Scoobies could keep him away?  You think they won't try anyway?
