Since I was taping Smallville, I couldn't watch this twice last night so I got up early to do so. I'll repeat my offer to tape Smallville for anyone in the deprived condition of having only one vcr. I plan on watching 24 during one of the many repeats. It's a good thing the baseball season is over... And coming up next - spoiler space. I asked my bunny about the carrot thing, but he wouldn't answer... And the winner and still god - Joss Whedon... Am I the only one who didn't see this as a comic episode? Yes it started out funny (and brightly lit) but it spiraled very quickly into a dark (literally and figuratively) show. There was comic relief, but there's always comic relief. The only bit I saw as pure, lighthearted fun was Xander and Anya's duet. Tara's song on the other hand really spooked me, especially the bit where Tara was floating and trusting Willow to support her, what happens when she looks down and nobody's there. Of course, the same could be said for Buffy once Giles leaves, but I think she has a better chance of ending up on her feet. And since they didn't actually kill the demon, there is a chance that we could have another all singing/all dancing episode... On a side note, we're always talking about patterns in Buffy...I'm not sure the following counts, but it might be something to consider when trying to identify the big bad of the season: 1st season - original villain - The Master; villain at the end of the series The Master and the Anointed One. 2nd season - original villain - The Anointed One then Spike and Dru, then Angel and Dru with Spike in the background 3rd season - original villain - Mr. Trick, then Mr. Trick and the Mayor, then the Mayor and Faith 4th season - original villain - the Initiative headed by Maggie Walsh, final villain Adam 5th season - original villain - Glory who went the distance... 6th season - original villain - seems to be a combination of Buffy's depression and Willow...who knows what will happen by the end of the season. -- Hilary Hertzoff hhertzof@panix.com Mamaroneck, NY hilaryh@dm.net Miss Bettany had told them to read the classics and see how little slang was used there, and to try to model their own speech rather more on them than on that of cheap magazines filled with Americanese and language which might be suitable for boys, but was not allowable for girls. - Jo of the Chalet School ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Nov 2001 07:31:38 -0800 From: "Marta Grabien" Subject: Re: b/once more, with feeling > SPOILER SPACE > . > . > . > . > . > . > . > . > . > . > . > . > . > . > . > > > > (But hey, why didn't Willow get her own song?!?) > > > Yeah, I noticed that, if we count Dawn's dance number, the only Scooby > to not get a number or duet of their own was.... I suspect that there was a combination of things that forced Willow into the 'background'. One, she can't sing and really doesn't move well, but I suspect that the real reason is more mundane. SMG was on Leno the other night and revealed that they were filming about 4 other episodes at the same time. I bet Willow has major stuff to do in them and really was too swamped. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Nov 2001 07:35:27 -0800 From: "Marta Grabien" Subject: Re: b/1+w/feeling > ... and finally there's the final shot, which of course needs no > elaboration. Hoo-boy. Which final shot? The one in the episode, or the one in the coming next week? Both were killers. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Nov 2001 07:32:02 -0800 From: "David S. Bratman" Subject: b/precursor of the return of Buffy I don't know why I didn't think of this before. The basic situation is the same - a dead person in Heaven is returned to life by those who think that person's skills are needed - but the differences are as intriguing as the similarities. For one thing, this Willow knew what he was doing - and does not later suffer for it as we fear our Willow will. * * * * * "You were judged worthy of Nirvana. Your _atman_ was projected, not into another body, but into the great magnetic cloud that encircles this planet. That was over half a century ago. ... You, personally, continued to exist only in the form of self-perpetuating wavelengths, which I succeeded in capturing." Sam closed his eyes. "And you _dared_ to bring me back?" "That is correct." "I was aware of my condition the entire time." "I suspected as much." His eyes opened, blazing. "Yet you dared recall me from _that_?" "Yes." Sam bowed his head. "Rightly are you called deathgod, Yama-Dharma. You have snatched away from me the ultimate experience. You have broken upon the dark stone of your will that which is beyond all comprehension and mortal splendor. Why could you not have left me as I was, in the sea of being?" Well, that, and the thought of Xander being his bride. Besides, I thought that all the revelations that came out of the evening proved that they were already more miserable than he could ever make them. > -- The gang now knows where Buffy really was (points to Willow for actually > showing remorse) I told David afterwards that my prediction (and, okay, I'm never right about these things) is that this knowledge, that she was wrong and pulled Buffy out of heaven, not hell, is what will set Willow off on the Wicked Willow. She'll be so guilt-ridden that she will direct her self-hatred outward at her friends. > -- Xander 'fesses up that the prospect of marrying Anya has him freaked out > (was she even listening?) The promo for next week kind of made it look like Anya and Xander may soon be a thing of the past. > -- Tara finds out what Willow did, and decides to break up with her (!) I knew it would happen, but I didn't expect it to happen so soon. It was very well done, though. Everyone sang what was true. Tara sang "I'm Under Your Spell!" to Willow, not realizing it was literally true. The reprise of that, in the magic shop when she verified that the flower was a spell, was a nice twist, and melded nicely into Giles' song about having to leave. > ... and finally there's the final shot, which of course needs no > elaboration. Hoo-boy. Again, one of the great moments was at the beginning of Spike's number when he says she's telling secrets to a dead man. That gave me a shiver! > It'd take me several screens to list my favorite moments, but on first > viewing I think the winner is definitely Anya's "bunnies" song. Oh my. Not being a hard rock person, I was disappointed in the genre, but I admit it was funny considering the text. I would have preferred different music for the bunnies song, but I'm very glad it was in there. > And Amber Benson can *sing*. Who knew?? I did, I did! At a meeting of our book group some months ago, someone had a video of a Rocky Horror get-together. ASH was there singing "Sweet Transvestite" and Amber Benson in bra and half-slip sang "Touch-a Touch-a Touch Me." Not great, but decent. > Judging from the few lines Alyson Hannigan did > sing, I think I know why Willow didn't get her own song Oh, yeah. > I've heard that David Fury and Marti Noxon had cameos (I'm guessing Fury > was the dude in the furry demon suit in Buffy's first number, and Noxon was > the woman lamenting her parking ticket).
