At least this way he can show up now and again. :) But I'm still extremely uncomfortable with their dispatching him in a manner that seemed so out of character, even irresponsible. - ---Karin ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Oct 2001 15:42:08 -0400 From: "Karin Rabe" Subject: RE: b/bargaining2 P.S. And shouldn't Giles have been concerned about Sunnydale's need for a =new= slayer, someone to take over for Buffy? - ---Karin ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 8 Oct 2001 16:21:57 EDT From: GHighPine@aol.com Subject: b/ E! special Has anyone seen the behind-the-scenes special on BUFFY on the E! channel? I saw it last night (apparently it has been rerun various times already). It's worth watching, most of all IMO for a) interviews with Joss, whom I've never seen speak "live" before (seen only photos and print interviews) and b) seeing and hearing James Marsters as himself. The best (IMO) single gem of insight came from Emma Caulfield, though, when she talked about that great Anya scene in "The Body" (the only part of "The Body" that brought me to tears). She said (quoting from memory), "Joss is so fussy about tears. We shot that over and over again, and he'd say, 'Have the tear come a second later,' 'Have the tear start on this syllable,' shooting it over and over again, never satisfied. Finally I was exhausted, but he said we had to do one more take. I was so frustrated and exhausted I didn't think I could go through it again, but he made me do it anyway, and then to my surprise he said 'That was perfect! Just what I wanted!'" And shouldn't Giles have been concerned about Sunnydale's need for a > =new= slayer, someone to take over for Buffy? I re-watched the episode over the weekend. What obviously sends him over the edge is when the Buffybot says, "Why are you still here?" Giles suffers with periodic bouts of depression. Many of his season 4 scenes show this. I think the Buffybot's comment sent him into even deeper a funk and he went off without thinking it through clearly. It was almost like a suicidal "you'll be better off without me!" Spike's comments contribute to this as well. ("Cup of tea, cup of tea, almost got shagged, cup of tea" as his interpretation of Giles' life passing before his eyes.) And as for Sunnydale being slayerless, well, what's he going to do -- off Faith? His work was complete. His departure maybe could have been handled better, but I found it believable and not out of character. Also, I saw in a recent AP news item that _Buffy_'s premiere last Tuesday scored UPN's highest ratings ever for that night. Way to go... ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth "an eye for an eye only ends up making the whole world blind" -- mahatma gandhi ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ------------------------------ End of stillpt-digest V3 #155 *****************************
