Keller" Subject: NYC Disaster How the luckier New Yorkers live: Tuesday morning I didn't get a call for temp work, so I was going around doing errands (laundry, etc.) and began hearing snippets on the radio about something going on at the WTC. (I never watch the news.) When I got home I turned on the TV and was watching the live shot when the second tower collapsed. An unbelievable and stunning sight. I figured, correctly, that I wasn't going to get any work for the forseeable future, so I've been cooped up in my apartment watching the news for two days. (Curiously, I've only been able to get CBS, Channel 2, where I am all this time up through Channel 13, except for intermittent--and worse than usual quality--reception on Channel 11. And Channel 2 was off for a little while on Wednesday.) Wednesday I went outside briefly, and the air was definitely hazy, with a bit of a burn smell. (I've been able to see smoke off in the distance looking south on Avenue A since the disaster.) I didn't stay out long, just went from my 12th Street apartment up to 15th street to my bank machine (figuring if I didn't have to go uptown to pick up my check I'd wait another day) and passing the police barriers preventing vehicular traffic south of 14th Street. In fact, when I returned I had to show my ID with address to a terse but polite policeman before I was allowed south of 14th Street again. My agency called yesterday afternoon to check if I were available for work, but I still didn't get a call (nor have I this morning). I woke up in the middle of the night (surprisingly, I've been sleeping OK) to a bit of a burn smell (all my windows are shut, but not sealed), but by this morning that's gone. (The wind has been shifting around.) I'm going to attempt a semblance of a normal day today. (I don't know about Channel 11.) I saw a list on one of the news reports. >passing the police barriers preventing vehicular >traffic south of 14th Street. There was a good article in Slate by Jacob Weisberg, who lives in Tribeca, about the situation there and the barriers. He'd fled home without any ID, "but my wife's checkbook and a bit of pleading convinced considerate officers to let me through check points first at Houston Street, then at Canal Street." They probably just wanted to confirm that you're alive and well. We, also, are glad to know this. DB ------------------------------ End of stillpt-digest V3 #139 *****************************
