"Lindsay's Evil Hand" was actually called "Dead End" (ha ha), and last week's was "Belonging." Coming up: 5/8 Over the Rainbow 5/15 Through the Looking Glass 5/22 There's no Place Like Plrtz Glrb Yeah, I stared at that last for a minute before I assimilated it. Makes a lot more sense when you remember Cordelia reading from that book and wanting to buy a vowel (well, in this language, obviously the liquids--'r's and 'l's--are the vowels, but I digress linguistically). Note also the =Wizard of Oz=/=Alice in Wonderland= sandwich, and the continuation of the =Angel= tradition of a word in some other language in the title of the finale. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 May 2001 01:19:13 -0400 (EDT) From: "Donald G. Obviously I hadn't read all of it. from =TV Guide= April 28-May 4th: [sidebar: ROUSH RAVE] "Much more effective than the muddled resurrection of =The X-Files='s Fox Mulder was the =non=-resurrection of =Buffy the Vampire Slayer='s Joyce Summers on April 17, the first new episode in a near-eternity. After weeks of buzz that Buffy's mom might be brought back to life, the show delivered an inspired variation on 'The Monkey's Paw,' the classic horror tale warning against disrupting the natural order of things. Dawn (Michelle Trachtenberg) used witchcraft to revive Joyce but reversed her decision in the nick of time, leading to a tearful catharsis. As usual, Buffy cast a spell as emotional as it was frightening." Matt Roush in his regular column has been a staunch supporter of =Buffy=; I have at least two more full columns of his devoted to the show. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 May 2001 01:31:29 -0400 (EDT) From: "Donald G. Keller" Subject: b/bye bye love So I'm channel-surfing while the basketball game is on commercial this afternoon, and I land on this movie, and I suddenly realize: hey, that's Eliza Dushku! What =is= this? Turned out my local Fox station was running =Bye Bye Love=, the 1995 movie that also has Amber Benson in it. And right on cue, there she was, she and Eliza Dushku going to McDonald's. Turns out the movie is basically about three divorced guys (Randy Quaid, Paul Reiser, Matthew Modine) and the women they've been married to and the ones they're interested in now (including Amy Brenneman, Jeanine Garofolo, Mary Pitillo--some of these spellings speculative--and a briefly-glimpsed Lindsay Crouse). It's nominally a comedy, and not that good a one; also, there are too many characters and the progress becomes too fractured; nobody has quite enough to do, Amber Benson for one. It should surprise none of us that when they needed a dramatic crisis to bring the plot to a climax they turned to Eliza Dushku. She was probably about 14 when this was made, but just like Michelle Trachtenberg at the same age, she carried the weight very well. She plays Paul Reiser's daughter, and their scenes together were the best ones I saw. (I didn't catch the beginning, and kept getting annoyed and turning back to the game.) Not sure I recommend it, but if it gets run again some future weekend I'll probably try and see at least the Eliza Dushku scenes again. ------------------------------ End of stillpt-digest V3 #79 ****************************
