The following appeared on Yahoo today: - ---------------------------------------------------- Friday April 20 09:35 PM EDT Vampire Smackdown: "Buffy" Moves to UPN UPN has driven a stake through Buffy the Vampire Slayer's run on the WB. After months of negotiations--and an unusually bitter public battle over the fate of the teen-cult hit-- Joss Whedon's critically acclaimed series is jumping from the WB to UPN. UPN announced late Friday that it has sealed a two-year, $102 million deal with Buffy producer 20th Century Fox Television, ending months of speculation over whether Sarah Michelle Gellar's bloodsucker-battling heroine would leave the WB, her home since Buffy premiered in March of 1997. The Smackdown Network has ordered 44 episodes of the series, which will begin airing this fall on its new home (time and date are yet to be announced). Sources say UPN will fork over $2.3 million per episode for the first season and $2.35 million for season two. Said UPN President Dean Valentine in a statement: "We are incredibly pleased to have Buffy the Vampire Slayer (news - Y! TV) on UPN, not just because it is one of the best shows on the air and represents a new era in UPN's life and direction, but more importantly because Joss Whedon is one of the finest writers and producers in television. Our main motivation for pursuing Buffy so aggressively was to be in business with Joss and with 20th...and we're very pleased to have that opportunity." The 100th and final WB episode of Buffy airs May 22. - --------------------------------------------------- While I don't particularly care for UPN (and sympathize with those whose towns don't even have an affiliate), I'm pleased it's been renewed for two years off the bat. I was very surprised it didn't go to Fox. Yahoo! Figures. :) >While I don't particularly care for UPN (and >sympathize with those whose towns don't even have an >affiliate), I'm pleased it's been renewed for two >years off the bat. I can't say I'm surprised, though, since the network is losing its franchise show, _Voyager_ at the end of this season and I'm sure they were a wee bit desperate to bring in something with some cred. It's kind of funny, though -- here in CT lots of people have been confused this season because the local UPN and WB affiliates did a switcheroo last fall. Now _Buffy_ will be going back to the channel it started on in the first place. I just hope they don't schedule it opposite _Angel_. Or _Dark Angel_, for that matter. I hope they're not that stupid. Come to think of it, I hope the WB doesn't up and cancel _Angel_ now, just to be pissy. That was presented as a possibility when this whole mess first came up. I'll bet this pretty much seals the fate of _Roswell_, though (the other Fox studios show on the WB). ======================================= Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille ======================================= Live At The House O'Muzak House Concert Series http://www.smoe.org/meth/muzak.html ------------------------------ End of stillpt-digest V3 #68 ****************************
