Hi, For those who couldn't get to the link, Julie Benz is up for a pilot for a new show by Kevin Williamson (the mastermind who brought us _Dawson's Creek_ and _The Faculty_), which is based on his youth "in a small town in central Maine". Being from a small town in central Maine, I'm finding that I'm intrigued in spite of myself. (And I'm also confused, because I thought Williamson was from North Carolina. Whatever.) In other news, Elisabeth Roehm (Kate)'s other show, _Bull_ on TNT isn't doing so hot since the market crashed, and it's doubtful that it's going to be back. So maybe we'll be seeing more of her on _Angel_ after all. No new news on the "where will _Buffy_ be next year?" front. ======================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ======================================= ***!!!GO UCONN!!!*** ======================================= http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 28 Mar 2001 22:55:22 -0500 From: meredith Subject: b/interview with The Host Hi, There's a great interview with Andy Hallett (a.k.a. The Host on _Angel_) at IGN: In it, Andy alludes to a film he's working on called _The Chance_, which was written and directed by Amber Benson (who also plays the title character, Chance). It also stars Emma Caulfield and James Marsters, among others. It's a 100% independent film production, so there's no guarantee it'll ever see the light of day. I hope it does, though!! ======================== Meredith Tarr New Haven, CT USA mailto:meth@smoe.org http://www.smoe.org/meth ======================================= ***!!!GO UCONN!!!*** ======================================= http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Mar 2001 17:17:16 EST From: GHighPine@aol.com Subject: Re: true lies BTW. Doris Egan just emailed me and said she doesn't want her post reposted anywhere, especially on large lists and public boards. She wrote what she did mainly because our list is made up of ex-Genie-ites and she intended it to be semi-private. Did he never consider >her for the role? Did he offer it to her and she was too busy? (She =has= >been really busy, viz. her absence on =Buffy= and =Angel=, except for that >one scene.) Did he offer it to her and she said, "Naah, it's too much like >Faith, I wanna do something different"? It's a small ex-Genie world -- Don edited an anthology one of my short stories appeared in. The Buffy list sounds like the kind of thing I'd ask to join, if I had time. Maybe when the strike comes. I don't have a real answer for you off the top of my head -- I've never heard Chic (our boss, who developed DA with Jim Cameron) or Jim mention Eliza Dushku. I do know that neither of them had ever watched Buffy -- nor had our co-executive producer, Rene Echevarria (DS9, Now and Again). And while diehard Buffy fans know how dazzlingly Dushku can play a wild and wicked supergirl, it may never have crossed their minds to imagine her that way. OTOH, two of the other more junior writers here (Moira, the story editor, and Jose, our first-year staffwriter) are long-time Buffy fans, as of course am I. (And as are all right-thinking peoples of the world.) When I wrote my first script, I kept imagining Faith saying the lines. Unfortunately, this ran into a bit of trouble with my boss, whose vision of Max is somewhat different. (It always takes a while with a new show to "get" the full flavor of what the creators envision for the characters.) The three of us being Buffyheads made for some interesting story meetings, though. "They did that on Buffy. Two years ago." "They did that on Buffy at the beginning of the season." "I'm not saying it's a bad idea. I'm just saying, they already did it on Buffy, in just that way." As one of my compadres said to me after a meeting I missed, "Too bad you weren't there to lend support. I thought if we said the word 'Buffy' one more time, Rene was gonna implode." Which is funny, considering there was talk from fans and reviewers at the beginning of the season that the character was based on Faith. But honestly, I don't think Buffy was even on their radar when they developed it. I do think the casting of Jessica Alba was inspired. They wanted someone unnaturally beautiful, someone you could believe was the product of genetic experimentation. It never would have occurred to me to see Jessica that way - -- disqualified by my gender and sexual preferences, I suppose. I'd have looked at her and seen another lovely young actress. And this town is full of lovely young actresses. But judging from the reaction I've observed in so many men, her effect is practically supernatural. Really. It's some kind of psychological phenomenon that deserves study. They're bowled over like ninepins. As long as I'm here, my next (and last) episode this season is set to run April 24. People from story editors right up to Jim Cameron have been saying it's the best thing we've done. Of course, as the person who wrote the first draft, I have this reflexive reaction that involves muttering about how much of the really fun dialogue and character stuff was cut. Well, and some of the action, too, but being me, I miss that less. Still, everyone's excited about it, and we got a guest actor so good that when the dailies reached Fox they immediately gave him a pilot of his own. So hopefully the audience will like it. Oh, and hey! I got my first mention in the trades, for the Clive Barker movie. - --Doris ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 29 Mar 2001 07:45:51 -0800 (PST) From: Todd Huff Subject: animated news From Reuters via Yahoo: Thursday March 29 3:41 AM ET Fox Kids snares ``Buffy'' cartoon By Paula Bernstein NEW YORK (Variety) - Fox has landed ``Buffy The Vampire Slayer'' -- at least the animated version. While the primetime fate of the live-action ``Buffy'' remains up in the air, Fox Kids Network said Wednesday it is developing ``Buffy The Vampire Slayer: The Animated Series'' with ``Buffy'' creator Joss Whedon. The ``Buffy'' cartoon could be on the air as early as February 2002, said Maureen Smith, president of Fox Family Channel and Fox Kids. While it will be based on the live-action drama, the Saturday-morning cartoon will focus more on high school storylines, she added. The live-action ``Buffy'' is at the center of a contrtact renegotiation dispute, with the show's producer, 20th Century Fox Television, demanding a higher licensing fee per episode than the WB Network is willing to pay. Because with the comparison between Faith and Max so obvious that fans and reviewers all over are comparing them, and some even suggesting that Max was inspired by Faith, and with even Doris hearing Faith's voice in her head when she wrote her first dialogue for Max, the last thing the creators would want to do is encourage viewers (and the writing staff) to see Faith when they look at Max by casting the same actress. Surely they'd want to do all they could to give their character a distinctive identity and voice of her own. I think Jessica Alba is very good, but the casting that really impresses me is that of Max as a child in the flashbacks -- it's amazing how they found a child that matches Alba's distinctive look.
