I guess the consistent thread here is the idea that Buffy can only "respect" a vampire who's not only a "worthy" adversary, i.e. is a match for her and therefore might actually kill her, but who remains true to his vampire nature by refusing to see her any other way. >> Um, that's not exactly consistent with the quote, nor with the fact that she respected Angel pre-soul loss. Of course I see that warrior's mentality in her; I just meant that it seems a shame if that's the sum =total= of her mentality where vampires are concerned. For that matter, I think even the warrior mentality towards a worthy adversary often contains a bit more diversified respect than that! :) When I said, > I guess the consistent thread here is the idea that Buffy can > only "respect" > a vampire who's not only a "worthy" adversary, i.e. is a match for her and > therefore might actually kill her, but who remains true to his vampire > nature by refusing to see her any other way. > >> You replied, > > Um, that's not exactly consistent with the quote, nor with the > fact that > she respected Angel pre-soul loss. I didn't mean my comment to be limited in its reference to the quote from you that immediately preceded it, but was trying to sum up what consistency I saw in our whole series of exchanges. And of course you're right, she respected Angel "pre-soul loss" -- but for the purposes of this discussion I meant vampire in the strict sense of the term, i.e., the soulless living dead. :) (And not to forget that her attraction to Angel began before she even knew he =was= a vampire.) Last night I watched that magnificent rerun at the very beginning of Joyce's illness, where Buffy almost gets herself slain and goes to Spike to learn how to avoid it. I found the last twenty minutes or so of it at least as powerful as anything in "The Body," IMHO, and I'll post some more specific comments explaining why I think so, when time permits. For now, suffice to say that the episode added some real depth to Spike's character, soulless though he may be. - ---Karin ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Mar 2001 19:11:25 -0800 From: "Marta Grabien" Subject: Re: b/body2 For now, suffice to > say that the episode added some real depth to Spike's character, soulless > though he may be. Both the women Spike loved said he was "beneath them". Actually, I went to the economy showing at 5:30, figuring I'd be back in plenty of time for Buffy, and was astonished when I looked at the clock after the movie was over and it was nearly 8:30. Sure as heck didn't feel like almost three hours had gone by. I saw the intense and gripping "Traffic." It's the only one of this year's Best Picture nominees I've seen so far, but I can certainly see why it got the nomination.
