Keller" Subject: b/etbest00 In =Entertainment Weekly='s "Best of 1998" issue, =Buffy= was listed as the No. 1 television program. In 1999 it finished 2nd to =The Sopranos=. In the just-published 2000 listing, it had slid to 5th, but since 4th was David Letterman (reinvigorated by his heart surgery) and 3rd was "Short Form Series TV" (a couple PBS miniseries and =Survivor=), =Buffy= really only fell one more place (behind #1 =The West Wing= and =The Sopranos= again). Here's the squib by Ken Tucker: "Creator Joss Whedon's stated objective for this season--to reunite the series' core characters (Buffy, Xander, Willow, and Giles) as a superteam of buddies--was nearly waylaid by a number of things: the addition of Buffy's new boyfriend, Riley (a dullard, and, miraculously, acknowledged as such by the writers via Buffy's cooling attraction to him midway through the season); a new element of prickly Spike's personality (he's gaga for the Slayer); and the still-unfolding mystery of of the sister Buffy never had (a delightful, time-honored comic-book device--what DC Comics used to label on its covers "an imaginary story"--made flesh). Still, I'd say: Objective achieved, and then some. You can't go wrong by turning Anthony Stewart Head's Giles from a fussy librarian into a fusty shopkeeper--the guy gets more laughs out of prissiness these days than Frasier and Niles combined--and Michelle Trachtenberg, as sister Dawn, is the best kid actress in prime time this side of =Once and Again='s luminous Evan Rachel Wood." Fair enough, I think. Curious note: this Tuesday of course we have new episodes of =Buffy= and =Angel=, but next Tuesday (the new =TV Guide= reveals=), they're rerunning =last= season's finales. So if any of you still haven't seen/taped "Restless," here's another chance. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 17 Dec 2000 20:33:50 -0500 From: Dori Subject: Re: b/etbest00 >Fair enough, I think. Hrmph. I'd dispute that Riley the dullard comment, me. It makes me cranky when genuinely nice guys are labeled dull because they're =nice=. Of course, since I'm married to a guy who could have been the model for Riley, maybe I'm taking it a little more personally than I ought. Although after Tuesday's episode, I'm thinking they might have to revise their opinion of how dull Riley is. - -- Dori cleindori@rica.net - -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=- ...perhaps love belonged to Chaos all along.
