A few good lines, a couple of laughs at Xander's expense, and that's about it. Filler. At least they acknowledged the old Star Trek episode they were lifting the idea from. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Get Yahoo! Uh, no, you can't. Me, for instance, I'm still too dazed and happy to post. >A few good lines, a couple of laughs at Xander's >expense, and that's about it. Filler. Except for the catalytic event for Xander's finally reaching out and taking control of his life. A new apartment that's nice enough to entertain in and doesn't have battling drunken parents upstairs, a better job earned by being good at the previous one (and sticking with it), and most of all, the willingness to take himself seriously, because he has proof that when he does, so do other people. And except for the bonding between Riley and Xander -- Xander reaches out, early in the ep, in response to a comment by Riley, and Riley opens up to him at the end about Buffy, and we learn that Riley knows the limits of the relationship and has accepted them, and we get to watch Xander's reaction. Also, a few of us may have enjoyed the cheap innuendo. Like me and my family and my friends. >At least they acknowledged the old Star Trek episode >they were lifting the idea from. But did they acknowledge the =Red Dwarf= episode "Confidence and Paranoia", which was a much closer match? No, they did not, the bums, probably because they didn't know about it. An archetype is an archetype. There are a number of classic things to do with identical twins, and that's one of them. If you think it's a stale idea, blame Madame Fortune for providing Nick Brendon with a twin brother, despite the fact that there have been identical twins many times in the past, and it's hardly new. I'm not complaining. I was a bit annoyed that Jane (or was it just Xander?) got the Star Trek reference wrong, though. A *true* geek would know that: A: The quote isn't "Kill us both, Spock", but something closer to "Shoot boht of us, Spock." (Which, considering that phasers have a "stun" setting, is what Spock should have done immediately, rather than let the Kirks fight it out); B: However, the above quote is from... uh-oh, geek powers fading... the episode with the shape-shifting Captain Garth on the insane asylum planet, rather than the far-more-appropriate episode "The Enemy Within" (Transporter accident splits Kirk into wimpy-Good and potent-Evil twins). Then again, the quote as used fit the pacing, and worked, so who am I to complain? ;) ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Oct 2000 18:06:53 -0700 From: "Berni Phillips" Subject: Re: Buffy From: "Dawn Friedman" > At 07:26 AM 10/12/00 -0700, Todd wrote: > >A few good lines, a couple of laughs at Xander's > >expense, and that's about it. I think it's a pivot point for Xander, directly relating to his "no more butt monkeys." I expect a change of direction with the character. > And except for the bonding between Riley and Xander -- Xander reaches out, > early in the ep, in response to a comment by Riley, and Riley opens up to > him at the end about Buffy, and we learn that Riley knows the limits of the > relationship and has accepted them, and we get to watch Xander's reaction. My heart caught in my throat at that! It's like an invitation to kill off Riley, him acknowledging that however much he loves Buffy, he is not blind enough to think she truly loves him. (Although I think Buffy thinks she loves him.) Once they've established that, I don't see a whole lot of future for Riley on the show. We still have Xander still carrying a torch for Buffy. And, hey, wasn't it nice to finally catch a glimpse of Anya's apartment? We need to find out more about how she supports herself. And is Buffy not staying in the dorm this year? She always seems to be at home whereas Willow seems to be in the dorm room. Berni ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Oct 2000 00:17:06 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: Buffy Hi! Dawn responded: >Uh, no, you can't. I quite liked it too. Just haven't had time to post anything about it ... between baseball and going to see _Dancer In the Dark_ last night (more on that in a separate rock if people are interested), this is the first chance I've had. I agree with Berni that this is probably going to turn out to be Xander's Big Moment Episode. He gets to keep all the things is suave half got for him. Nick Brendon did a really great job, and so did his brother! (Incidentally, the episode was titled "The Replacement".) >And except for the bonding between Riley and Xander -- Xander reaches out, >early in the ep, in response to a comment by Riley, and Riley opens up to >him at the end about Buffy, and we learn that Riley knows the limits of the >relationship and has accepted them, and we get to watch Xander's reaction. That comment came out of far left field, and completely threw me for a loop. I took it as adding yet more fuel to the "something is rotten in Sunnydale" theme of this season so far. If this weren't an alternate universe, would Riley say that? I don't think so What has Buffy said or done to indicate that she *doesn't* love him? Nothing that we've seen -- but then I'm notorious for missing telling things like that. >But did they acknowledge the =Red Dwarf= episode "Confidence and Paranoia", >which was a much closer match? No, they did not, the bums, probably >because they didn't know about it. Never mind that. My personal favorite was the mention of Xander's collection of Babylon 5 commemorative plates. ;> That beat out the Hogwarts line from last week as reference of the year so far... Berni added: >And is Buffy not >staying in the dorm this year? She always seems to be at home whereas >Willow seems to be in the dorm room. Has school even started yet? Methinks in this alternate universe, it's eternally summer. I do wish Tara had been in this episode, though. We didn't even get a throwaway line covering where she may have been. Considering the continuity with Anya's sling and the state of the magic shop (and of course Dawn's continued presence), that was rather glaring in my estimation. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Oct 2000 23:28:44 -0500 (CDT) From: allenw Subject: Re: Buffy On Fri, 13 Oct 2000, meredith wrote: > That comment came out of far left field, and completely threw me for a > loop.
