The first one had to do with Xena in another woman's body. (Of >course, that was disappointing for an intro, as I wanted to see the lead >actress and what she was like. She showed up only at the end.) That would be "Ten Little Warlords". The previous episode, "Intimate Stranger" is one of the highlights of the series -- that's where Callisto and Xena got their bodies switched, a-la Buffy and Faith. Things were supposed to go back to normal in the end, but Lucy Lawless was seriously injured rehearsing a stunt for The Tonight Show and they had to keep Hudson Leick playing Xena for one more episode. "TLW" is an okay ep, but it's not one of the tops. >The second >one was set on a boat that was sinking. That was dramatic and pretty good, >but nothing outstanding as far as TV dramas go, IMO. "Tsunami". One of my personal faves, but I know I'm in the minority out there. The closing line of Xena's is particularly moving if you know her history. >The third one I saw had >to do with a baby they found who turned out at the end to be some child with >a special destiny That had more humor in it. "Cradle Of Hope". One of the first 3 or 4 episodes of the series, and not one of the better ones, imho. > I think that David had an interesting clue, that the episodes that are >purely dramatic or purely humorous work better than the ones that are >somewhere in between, as the baby episode was. I suspect that that is true. Not usually, actually. The eps that have both comedy and drama work better than just the comedies most of the time. A good example of this would be "The Quest", in which Xena has died (another episode made necessary by Lawless' injury, and the best of the lot) and Gabrielle has to get her body home for the burial she wanted. It's one of the pivotal episodes of the series, and has some real killer moments, but it's also absolutely hilarious in spots, as Xena's spirit has to possess the body of Autolycus, the King of Thieves (played wonderfully by Bruce Campbell) in order to get her own body back. >That ep wasn't really funny enough to be funny and not dramatic enough to be >dramatic. But, though I haven't seen a completely humorous ep, I can >imagine them easily enough and imagine that the show can be pretty funny. It can. It totally doesn't take itself seriously, though in the past couple seasons they haven't been as successful as in the early years. It just so happens that there is an article today about the best episodes of the first two seasons, which are a good guide if you're looking to check out just a few eps here and there in reruns. It's at . > Anyway, could someone let me know when a really tiptop episode is due to be >broadcast? Or would the impact fail if one had not seen the episodes before? The USA Network shows an episode every Sunday morning at 7 am EST. Looking at the airing schedule I'd say there isn't a really good one until August 27, when "Hooves And Harlots" is on the docket. That's the one where we first meet the Amazons, and Gabrielle really starts to come into her own as a character. It's one of the all-time best. > (Hm, I wouldn't say the same about Buffy's mix of comedy and drama. The >blend seems to work there. Yes, definitely. _Xena_ tries, but can never quite manage to pull off a completely hilarious moment in an otherwise utterly serious episode, such as _Buffy_ does almost every week. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Jul 2000 23:00:49 EDT From: GHighPine@aol.com Subject: Re: o/X-Men movie (was Re: b/sappho2) My sister just saw X-MEN and raved about it. She said that it exactly captured the tone of the Marvels we read in the 60s (even though some of the X-Men lineup of characters changed since then -- there was no "Wolverine" in those days, for example, so I guess I won't appreciate that performance.) She said that it is by far the best comic-book-based movie she ever saw, and may turn out to be one of her all-time-favorite movies period. Oh, you will. Hugh Jackman's Wolverine is WONDERFUL.
