Jennifer, one reason I began watching _Buffy_ in the first place was that I couldn't stand all this discussion in Donald's topic of something I knew nothing about. The cheese man is this goofy guy bearing slices of American cheese who shows up in unexpected spots in each of the four dreams in "Restless", makes a brief cryptic comment, and then disappears. And his existence provides the punch line of the episode, as Don's summary recounts. Little things like this often provoke the most interesting discussions. In _The Lord of the Rings_, as the Fellowship are walking through the Mines of Moria, Gandalf makes a remark about the strange sounds they're hearing. (from memory) "Deep down below the mountains, nameless things gnaw the earth. Even Sauron knows them not. They are older than he." This cryptic remark has generated immense speculation on the Tolkien mailing list about Nameless Gnawing Things, or NGTs for short. Once a gnawing thing's name is discovered, does it cease to be an NGT? Questions like that. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 15 Jun 2000 10:37:37 EDT From: GHighPine@aol.com Subject: Re: Cheese Man? (Not getting WB is no excuse, since I am sure there are people who would be happy to make tapes for you.) To answer your question -- the Cheese Man was a guy with cheese. (Who appeared in all the dreams.) Pretty simple when you know the answer, huh? ;-) Gayle ------------------------------ End of stillpt-digest V2 #138 *****************************
