I remember thinking that last week was the pivot point as everything that had happened this season came to a head, but that was only the main storylines. In this episode all of the background disatisfaction came to a head. Someone on one of my other mailing lists suggested that neither Adam or Maggie were the main enemy this year, instead it was the dissolution of the Scooby gang. And when you think about it, the theme of this season is alienation. All of the main cast have experienced it starting with Buffy in the very first episode. And that is what Spike played upon with his barbs Xander is alienated by not fitting in with his friends who have gone to college. Willow is alienated from Buffy's new boyfriend, the loss of Oz and the new relationship with Tara. Giles is alienated by the fact that Buffy no longer feels she need a watcher. Spike is alienated by the chip in his head. And Riley has been alienated from everything he believed. Side Notes: This episode wins the award for dialogue. Not just the jokes - there wasn't a word out of place. I don't think I've ever heard Free Bird either. And another parallel came to mind which I don't think we've mentioned: Buffy = Angel = Faith All three died in the last episode of the season only to return. Hilary Hilary L. I agree about the alienation. Individual characters have felt alienated before, but I don't think the group has had this much internal conflict before.
