Believe it or not, I just watched this one ... I was out of town last Tuesday and Life has intervened so this was the first chance we've had to see it. I was good, though, and didn't read any of the posts on the subject until now! First, I thought it must be significant that in Jonathan's World, it was always raining in Sunnydale. Did anyone else pick up on that? Don noted: >Also, the monster was =very= ineffective; Tara and Karen-with-a-K >are neither of them, on the face of it, able to fight much; but both >of them got away from it. (True, Tara confused it with her >"obscuritam" spell.) Buffy was able to fend it off fairly easily, >and even Jonathan reverted mostly to his former self was able to >rush it and knock it into the pit. But remember that the monster was the opposite of *Jonathan*, so wouldn't it necessarily have to be ineffective? If Jonathan were the paragon of all things good and useful, doesn't that mean the monster would have to be the epitome of incompetent evil? >And another: the passing joke of =Being Jonathan Levinson= on the >movie marquee was a stitch. (Even funnier than him being in =The >Matrix=.) Oh, definitely. That one put me right on the floor. :) >Xander setting the book on fire was hilarious. New favorite line for the series, there! "Xander, don't speak Latin in front of the books." >OK: how do we take the very last line of the episode? It was set up, >of course, by the conversation between Anya and Xander at the >Bronze; but with the spell gone, was it a joke on Buffy's part? Or a >Freudian slip? A joke, I think. Remember that Buffy and Riley were both watching Xander and Anya's discussion with keen (and amused) interest. >Then there's the question of what was "real" and what "illusory" in >the episode. I agree with David that Super-Jonathan knew things that >the "real" Jonathan never would have, and so I think we can take the >Initiative scene--the new CO (who we've been awaiting) and the >debriefing about Adam and his uranium pack--as real evidence that >will contribute to future episodes. Exactly. Super-Jonathan knew where to find Professor Walsh's plans for Adam, therefore we now know a lot more about Adam than we did before. That is definitely legitimate information. >Adam's role in the episode was (as Gayle pointed out) actually >pretty interesting. Anyone recognize the building he's holed up in? I wasn't even paying attention -- I was too busy marveling over the fact that the vampire toadie he was conversing with is a semi-regular on _Felicity_, and if the actor's _Felicity_ character were to turn into a vampire, that's EXACTLY what he would be like. :) >The fact that his awareness made him immune to the spell is another >item that will make him a formidable opponent. And what of that talk >about Chaos? Remember Ethan talking about Chaos in "A New Man" (to >be rerun, as I said)? Will Ethan return? I'm counting on it. Ethan has never been a passing plot device. Allen wondered: > By the way: The monster attacked Jonathan, Buffy, Tara, and >Karen-with-a-"K". Why? We know the first three are significant and >supernatural in some way; what about Karen? Why was Karen able to knock >over the monster so easily and escape? We've already been over the monster's necessary ineffectiveness. As for why Karen was the first victim, I think that's just plot device: have the monster attack someone we don't know first to introduce it as a threat, then have him move in toward the people we care about. >Why was she staking out Jonathan's >place in the first place; mere fan-stalking? Yes. That was set up pretty well in the preceding cafe scene. >Might this be devious >foreshadowing? Could she be... Little Sister/Little Miss Muffet? The >Next Slayer? A Watcher agent? Or just an obsessed fan swinging a really >big book? Whoa. Where are you getting all of *that*??? I, for one, don't ever expect to see "Karen with a K" again. Overall, a highly amusing episode, much more entertaining than I'd feared. Finally, I want to comment that I'm not going to be worried about the state of the show until the season is over. Joss has knocked our socks off in the span of *one* episode before, never mind five. I think it's significant that we got _Superstar_ as a new episode in the midst of a long dry spell; unless I'm mistaken it's pretty much where _Earshot_ would have been last year, and that didn't have a whole lot to do with much that followed, discounting the Prom scene and of course this whole episode. It's a bone to the fans to keep us sated until the real fun can begin to close the season out. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ End of stillpt-digest V2 #80 ****************************
