Keller" Subject: b/dumezil Hilary: Here's a precis of the Dumezil situation. Let's deal with =Mythe et epopee= first. Vol. I is not available in English at all. It's about 600 pages long and is mostly about the =Mahabharata=. Vol. II is available in English in three separate slim volumes: 1. =The Stakes of the Warrior= (U of California 1983) 2. =The Plight of a Sorcerer= (U of California 1986) 3. =The Destiny of a King= (U of Chicago 1973) I own the first and third (=Destiny of a King= is available as a trade paperback); =Plight= I can neither find a copy to buy nor a circulating copy. =Stakes= has been more important for =Buffy= stuff. Vol. III is =mostly= available (minus one 100-page chunk) as =Camillus= (U of California 1980). If you read French (which I really don't) I'd recommend finding the whole 1400-page all-in-one-volume edition and avoid all this nonsense. (I may buy it yet.) The rest of Dumezil in English: =Archaic Roman Religion= (Johns Hopkins 1996, 2 vol., trade paper, from a U of Chicago hardcover) =Mitra-Varuna= (Zone Books 1988 trade paper) =Gods of the Ancient Northmen= (U of California 1977 trade paperback, from their 1973 hardcover) =From Myth to Fiction: The Saga of Hadingus= (U of Chicago 1973) =The Destiny of the Warrior= (U of Chicago 1970) I think only the first two (along with =The Destiny of a King=) are currently in print. =The Destiny of the Warrior= is the one I've found the most useful for Indo-European myth-patterns about warriors, but all of them have at least some interesting material as well. I'd start with =Destiny of the Warrior= and then work through the =Mythe et epopee= pieces. Also, a useful survey of Dumezil's work and a summation of the material he worked with, both by younger colleagues: Littleton, C. Scott. =The New Comparative Mythology: An Anthropological Assessment of the Theories of Georges Dumezil=. U of California. I have the 2nd edition, but there is a 3rd. Puhvel, Jaan. =Comparative Mythology=. Johns Hopkins 1987. This one's in print. Let me know how your research goes. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 02 Mar 2000 09:23:37 -0700 From: "Susan J. Kroupa" Subject: Re: b/whoareyou I _thought_ they looked awfully similar. Heck, he makes the Master seem like a wild and crazy guy. He needs to actually start interacting with the other characters instead of just standing around declaiming. He's going to make a heck of an action figure, though. Greg commented: >He's going to make a heck of an action figure, though. Ah, Greg, always looking for the marketing angle. ;> You are certainly right, however. Personally I thought the whole Adam thing was stoopid from the very start, never mind his proclamation about "destroying life" this week. However, Joss being Joss I'm holding high hopes that that whole storyline will be satisfactorily resolved by the end of the season, and it will all make sense in the end. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ End of stillpt-digest V2 #53 ****************************
