[THIS PAGE INTENTIONALLY LEFT BLANK] David, give yourself a pat on the back re Riley and Walsh. You know, I =actually= bought Buffy's demise for about 30 seconds, even musing whether that would "re-activate" Faith (which doesn't actually make sense). Very clever. (But why couldn't Walsh see the rest of the fight? Did she stop watching?) =Very= clever moment with Buffy waking up the Morning After and thinking she was alone. We remember the previous occasions. Nice sets of parallels and juxtapositions between the various people and teams. And not only Willow and Tara speaking in subtext. And Willow =still= fibbing up a storm... I particularly liked the trailer, where the first (mostly comic) scene serves to cast doubt on the Initiative, and where as usual we take both Willow and Xander with a grain of salt, she being a little too optimistic, he being a little too pessimistic. And then a scene which on the surface seems more positive, but ends by casting =more= doubt. So is the Frankenstein demon the agenda all along? %#@*! I seem to have lost the random bit of paper I wrote down the future titles on. I know this one was "The 'I' in Team" and next week is "Goodbye Iowa," but I don't remember the two =Angel= titles. Help? Also, help!! today at work I drew a very busy diagram I titled "Jungian Alchemical Symbolism in =American Beauty=," as in the recent movie I just saw a week or so ago, one of the best movies I've seen since...well, I don't know when. "Hello, I'm Don, and I'm a patternaholic." Currently in the toils of another long post on Jung and alchemy, which will probably exfoliate a separate post of just comments on recent digests. Soon, I hope. Bad joke to end the evening, with apologies to the devout: a variation on the old Prince Albert in a Can telephone joke. "Have you accepted Jesus into your heart?...Well, you'd better let him out." ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 Feb 2000 00:54:53 -0500 From: Micole Sudberg Subject: Re: NEW! COMMENTS! Very clever. (But why couldn't Walsh see the rest of the >fight? Did she stop watching?) I thought Buffy dropped the comcam "eye"-down. There wasn't a view of anything; though I don't know how to rationalize what happened with the sound. I find believing in Buffy's demise as inexplicable as not realizing the opener of "Hush" was a dream ... :) >=Very= clever moment with Buffy waking up the Morning After and thinking >she was alone. We remember the previous occasions. I also liked the parallel of the fight/sex scene with Riley with the discussions of fighting and sex with Faith in Season 3. Plays into the second Slayer contrasts you've been talking about. >So is the Frankenstein demon the agenda all along? I'm kind of wondering if Walsh's replacement will be the "Professor of Demonology" mentioned in the WB's pre-season press releases, or if that was just PR cluelessness to be forever dropped. I'm also kind of wondering who poor Adam's human component was, and if Riley knows about Adam, or for that matter the cameras in his room; and is anybody else wondering if the vitamins are really vitamins? >%#@*! About damned time, In My Humble. I was =very= peeved when Buffy exhibited nary a qualm in IWRY when she woke up and Angel was gone. I'd have been panicking, never mind that he was human. Because, well, after INNOCENCE, and then that Parker disaster, "waking up alone" ought to equal "something bad's going to happen," even if it's not a rational thing. Er, and hello the list, BTW. Oh, and it occurs to me to wonder about Riley's vitamins. I have a verrrrry bad feeling about those... - -- Dori cleindor@cfw.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 9 Feb 2000 01:33:23 -0500 (EST) From: "David S. Bratman" Subject: Re: NEW! COMMENTS! SPOILERS! OK, if we're putting pages of white space, I'll put in a page of white space. Hmm. Thanks, I think. I guess that when we were trying to figure out what was coming up next, I happened to be looking in the right direction. One of the right directions, anyway. I say "one of", because what about the ending? I found that really disappointing. For one thing, we had a really interesting Buffy/Riley/Walsh power triangle shaping up here, and now what? Is this whole promising line going to be dropped in favor of Yet Another Invincible Demon? Or is the other prof, the guy in the white coat doing the operations, going to step into Walsh's shoes as if nothing had happened? For one brief, shining moment, I was hoping we'd found out who the season villain was going to be. But it's probably not a person, it's a thing. And no, not _that_ thing: the thing beginning with an I. From the moment those commandoes first started running around ... As individuals, some at least are nice guys and therefore false leads. For another problem with the ending, the whole "evil person's gloating interrupted by sudden comedown" shtick is getting really old. It was funny the first time, when Hostile 17 was first captured. It was even cute in the Ethan variant. But enough already. (But as far as I'm concerned, they can keep on pulling the Alan Moore trick of having the last line of dialogue in one scene commenting on the next, otherwise unrelated scene; that never gets tired.) The bit with Buffy dropping the camcom didn't fool me for 30 seconds, or even one second. When the weapon didn't work, that's when the other shoe dropped for Buffy. I was sure she removed the gizmo deliberately, and the only remaining question was whether she'd pick it up again for a rebuttal when the fight was over. She did. Heh. But what did get to me was what one might call the "sex and violence" scene. That was _very_ strange, and in visual style quite unlike anything I've seen on this show before. We weren't sure at first if it was a dream, or a commentary on the action, or what it turned out to be, namely a time intercut. Yes, we wondered about the vitamins too. Maybe that's what makes Riley not ask questions. But he's a military guy, too: they're like that. As far as I can tell, John McCain for all his renowned self-questioning has never asked whether it was a wrong thing for him to have been sent to bomb Hanoi in the first place. _Angel_ was a lot more straightforward this week, despite the unexpected switch between good guys and bad guys. Did anybody else read the bump-removal operation as a metaphor for clitorectomy? ------------------------------ End of stillpt-digest V2 #32 ****************************
