Keller" Subject: b/willow, trivia Not necessarily disagreeing, just musing: how long was it between Oz' first appearance on screen and the first time he said "Who =is= that girl?"? I don't think I've mentioned to this group the existence of =Buffy the Vampire Slayer Pop Quiz= by Cynthia Boris, an official publication of Pocket Pulse (Pocket Books' juvenile line). It's a 160-page trivia quiz, with a possible 1262 points (I didn't count accurately, but I got nearly 1000, roughly 75%--about as good as a human being with =any= life could possibly expect). It's thorough and tough, and goes through every episode (through end of Season 3). Here are the ones on the back cover copy: *Which episode featured Oz's first glimpse of Willow? *What is Buffy's address? [missed this one, know the street but not the number] *What does Cordelia's license plate say? *What did Giles want to be when he grew up? [two things; I missed one] *In which episode did Jonathan first speak? And a few more random ones: (from "Bad Eggs"): How did Buffy kill her gigapet? (from "Consequences"): Detective Paul Stein [didn't know his name, myself] comes to talk to Buffy about the killing. Don't we know him from somewhere? [Hint: more than once previously.] (from "Beauty and the Beasts"): Buffy's lunch is made up entirely of this dessert. And two from the "Knock Knock, Who's There" quiz--name the speaker, who they're speaking about, and for a bonus, what episode: "Thank God you're here. I was planning to panic." "That's it. I'm puttin' a collar with a little bell on that guy." I was amused to see them ask about Oz' last name, and at press time not have an answer. We do now, of course. I found the book enough fun to demolish at least an entire evening with. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Jan 2000 06:15:15 -0500 (EST) From: "Donald G. Keller" Subject: b/Top Ten Here's a useless conversation piece: how about a Top Ten Episodes for =Buffy=? I got thinking about this because it seemed to me that "Hush" is not only clearly by far the best episode this season, but an all-time outstanding episode. So, mentioning episodes in no particular order, let's start with "Hush," and add to it the three season finales, "Propecy Girl," "Becoming," and "Graduation Day" (and yes, I'm cheating and treating two-parters as single episodes); then "Surprise"/"Innocence" and "Passion" (the latter still #1 on my list) as well as "Ted" (as good a first three-quarters as they've ever done, and only dimmed a little by the resolution--I just watched it again this week) from the 2nd season; "Nightmares" and "The Pack" from the 1st season; and, oh, let's say "Amends" from the 3rd (if for nothing else maybe the best single scene in the series). The problem with lists like these of course is however objective one tries to be one ends up playing favorites; and I'm cognizant of the fact that the 3rd season gets a little slighted on the above (certainly "Helpless" and "Bad Girls"/"Consequences" would be honorable mentions). But my most glaring omission, I think, is "Angel." And I can't account for it. To me it's no better than fifth-best episode of the 1st season (I also prefer "Puppet Show"), even though I'm well aware that it's =the= most crucial episode of the season (after the premiere and the finale, i.e. the gist of the 1st season is in those four hours), the fulcrum on which the whole season pivots, in fact; structurally equivalent to "Surprise"/"Innocence" in the 2nd season. I guess that "Helpless" occupies that position in the 3rd season (Giles getting fired setting in motion the whole Faith problem). And the point of mentioning these parallels is to point out that we haven't =quite= hit that pivot-point this season yet, and we should be prepared for a big surprise. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Jan 2000 23:18:12 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Re: b/willow, trivia Hi! >Not necessarily disagreeing, just musing: how long was it between Oz' >first appearance on screen and the first time he said "Who =is= that >girl?"? I was going to make that point. It didn't take overly long for Oz and Veruca to get together, either. >I don't think I've mentioned to this group the existence of =Buffy the >Vampire Slayer Pop Quiz= by Cynthia Boris, an official publication of >Pocket Pulse (Pocket Books' juvenile line). Geez. I win prizes in the trivia quiz at Xena Night every month, yet I'm *completely* flummoxed by the Buffy questions you listed. It's rather embarrassing. I think I can take a stab at a couple of them, though. >*Which episode featured Oz's first glimpse of Willow? Um, "Halloween"? >*What does Cordelia's license plate say? "QUEEN C" >(from "Beauty and the Beasts"): Buffy's lunch is made up entirely of this >dessert. Jell-o? >"That's it. I'm puttin' a collar with a little bell on that guy." The quote is talking about Angel, but I can't remember who said it -- either Cordelia or Xander. Too bad the default answers from the Trivial Pursuit 80's Edition don't work here (Ronald Reagan or Orel Hershiser :)... +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ ------------------------------ End of stillpt-digest V2 #10 ****************************
