[BigHAIR844@aol.com] [s-r] So Good To Hear From You!!! [Terry Lee Hawkins ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sun, 21 Oct 2001 11:49:26 EDT From: BigHAIR844@aol.com Subject: [s-r] Hidey Ho! Greetings, Small Repairers! I'm here! Ever lurking and keeping up with you all. Thanks for the kind words, Terry Lee (i still have something i need to mail to you, oy! That goes for you too, Rob) ; and a hearty "Hello!" to Jenn... I'm still around. I hope everyone is well and safe from the crazy happenings in the world. I am thankful to only have been remotely affected by the september 11 tragedies... a friend of a friend type thing, but it still kind of feels weird when i try to make sense of all that happened. Music has definitely been helpful. Sorry that i have been scarce on the list... hmmm... i've only just recovered from my Rx.Bomb, er... i mean, Rx.Com experience. (Dang, that was the best job i ever had...) and some other stuff that i shan't bore you with, but all is well with me, as i hope with you all too. I'm finally enjoying Whole New You... it took me a while, but as a whole, i like it better and better with each listen. I was slightly sad initially, because i was missing the acoustic-ness of our Lady Shawn. Not to mention the guitar stylings of Mr. Steuart Smith. But, i've finally given in to the production of it all and have begun to appreciate the different layerings of effects which, by the way, if you haven't tried it yet, the CD is quite outstanding when you listen on headphones. Just my opinion. It took me a good 3 years to like Cover Girl, and now it's near the top of the list. I'm weird like that. So i'm sure that i will grow to love Whole New You. When cleaning out my "Mail Waiting to be Sent" box recently, i found a small-repairs post that i had started and never finished about Shawn playing an in-store at austin's beloved Waterloo Records. Hehehheh. Too bad i can't make a living as a Professional Procrastinator... (don't say it Rob!!) At any rate, like a good Small Repairer, i had diligently taken thorough notes about the event, (for which i had to duck early out of work), and proceeded to lose them. The details of Shawn's banter, wardrobe, set list and license plate number of the car she was driving have been lost forever. Rats. But, what i do remember most about that day, is that she drove up in a small, white vollkswagen something, parked right in front of the front door, waved hello to the patient fans lined up outside and walked right in. The fans enjoyed her humility. Immediately she apologized for the dreadful tuning, or lack thereof, of her guitar, because her usual instrument was in the back of the Landcruiser which the Nanny had taken off with. She played about 5 or 6 songs, all from the new album which i know included Matter of Minutes, Anywhere you Go, Roger Wilco, and Whole New You... i forget what else. I also remember that hearing those songs acoustically is what convinced me to appreciate the slightly over-produced versions on the CD. At least now, i can hear the basic framework of the songs and how shawn's acoustic guitar would have sounded had they turned that channel up. So, YaY! to shawn... she sounded great. I definitely prefer her new songs acoustically. "Anywhere You Go" is currently my favorite track on Whole New You.... but that could change with the passing wind.... [insert wind-like sound here.] I also saw shawn at Earth Day this Spring... Did i post that? I remember not. The highlight of that set was Callie singing "Doe a Deer, a Female deer..." and getting as far as "Me, a name I call myself... Fa -- Hey Mommmmie!! I want to see the Horsies over there!!!!!" Very cute. Shawn played solo acoustic for about 45 minutes, and we gawked from afar as she and Callie walked around and enjoyed the various displays and booths afterwards. Everyone left them alone as they took in the beautiful day in austin with the rest of us. I totally missed the Austin City Limits gig, both live and on television... I'm hoping it will magically appear on DVD someday in the future. Meanwhile, i have been enjoying Jonatha Brooke's newest CD, Steady Pull, a very very brilliant piece of work, and Suzanne Vega's recently released Songs in Red and Grey. Concertwise, i just saw Ani DiFranco & Lady Jane Grey and will soon be seeing Tori Amos and U2. Very excited about that. Those of you in the Pittsburgh area may be able to enjoy the following event i read about on the patty griffin list: WYEP is pleased to welcome Calliope, Pittsburgh Folk Music Society presentation of The Concert for a Landmine Free World with: Emmylou Harris+ Bruce Cockburn+ Nancy Griffith+ Mary Chapin Carpenter+ Patty Griffin +Steve Earle Soldiers & Sailors Wed. Dec. 5 Tickets are $89, $65, and $45, and will go on sale for the general public on October 17 through ProArts at (412) 394-3353. (http://www.proartstickets.org) *I'm surprised that Shawn isn't a part of this one. She would fit in perfectly since the performers are the usual company she keeps. November Project, the phoenix of October Project, is once again brewing with activity... if you are a fan, you should go to Novemberproject.com for info on when they will be playing and releasing their next CD with Marina Belica on lead vocals. should be a treat. So there you have it; Jean's Hum-drum-day-in-the-life-babble... take care everyone! i'm always listening and lurking... ~jean now playing: Soul Cages - Sting (I've rediscovered the tracks Island of Souls, and The Wild Wild Sea... ooooh weeee! good stuff.) Jean, aka Big Hair: Oh My God!!!! It's so good to hear from you. Your voice here on the small-repairs list has been sorely missed. Thanks so much for the info on your sightings of Shawn. I'm also with you on the acoustic thing. I too am loving the "Whole New You" Cd more and more with each new listen, but I still miss the more acoustic feel of the "Steady On" days. You know, styles and trends do go around in circles. So, maybe we just have to patient.... I've been listening to the new Suzanne Vega CD too. Damn good CD if I do say so myself. Track 4, "It Makes Me Wonder" is one of my favorites that has me hitting the repeat button. It might be nice to hear Suzanne and Shawn do something together again. I've also been giving the new Lucy Kaplansky CD "Every Single Day" a good spin too. I just bought a new 2002 Ford Explorer that has a 6-CD player. So, now I can do the CD shuffle on the way to and from work too. Guess I'll head back into lurkdom for the rest of the day, but I did want to pop my head out to say hello. Again, it was so nice to hear from you Big Hair. Always a pleasure. Take care of yourself. Happy listening, Terry Lee Currently in the 6-CD shuffle: Songs In Red & Gray - Suzanne Vega What You Whispered - David Wilcox Whole New You - Shawn Colvin Every Single Day - Lucy Kaplansky Room For Squares - John Mayer - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. It is not in stereo so the quality is not great but I can make you a copy if you'd like and mail it to you? Let me know if you want it. Take care.
