I've seen Shawn probably 10 times or so, usually solo but with band several times. This was solo acoustic. Approximate set list is below... Anywhere You Go Trouble Matter of Minutes Shotgun Down the Avalanche Polaroids Nothing Like You Whole New You Fearless Heart (Steve Earle) Sunny Came Home Wichita Skyline I Don't Know Why This Must Be the Place (Naive Melody) Every Little Thing He Does Is Magic Diamond In The Rough Killing the Blues I'll Be Back (Beatles) The Facts About Jimmy The Only Boy Living in New York (Paul Simon) Shawn was in exceptional voice, perhaps the best I've heard her, and the acoustics in the beautiful State Theatre were excellent. Unfortunately, the show was probably less than 1/2 sold, perhaps adding to the mood of the evening. Although it was an excellent show, it was very different from any other show I've seen. Throughout the evening, I couldn't help but pick up on a pervasive feeling of sadness from Shawn. Her guitarwork was executed well, but without the usual fire and percussive quality typical of her live shows. It was beautiful in a different way, more subtle and understated, with ample room for her vocals. There was the usual banter and some storytelling, but overall Shawn seemed to be somewhat solemn (perhaps just tired from the road). Mind you, this isn't criticism, just observation. Obviously, the set list consisted of many close-to-the-bone pieces like Killing the Blues, I Don't Know Why, Matter of Minutes, Trouble, etc., all adding a touch of melancholy to the evening. On the way to the bus, a few fans were there to thank her and give her support. I wanted to get a photo, but she didn't seem to be up for much interaction, so I didn't ask. It was great to at least give a quick "Thank You" to someone whose music has meant so much to me and many others over the years. And she dusted of an old gem I requested, Steve Earle's "Fearless Heart". Thought perhaps it might be a therapeutic request as well... ;-) I certainly hope all is well with her and wish her bright days ahead...
