It was Shawn's 3rd or fourth time playing there, I saw her two years ago the last time she played. She was the headliner that night and played with Steurt Smith. Knowing it's a fantastic venue, I was excited. However, I wondered about the attendence on this particular night. About 75% of the people who come to Ravinia get lawn seats and picnic, because the pavilion's relatively small in size. And tonight it was raining pretty heavily, so I thought that might affect the attendence...but it didn't in the least. People still showed up in droves to see Shawn and Emmylou. Anyone on this list that was on the grass, I give credit to, as did the performers and Ravinia staff who declared them "loyalists to great music". Shawn played solo this time, and if I had one thing to say it's that she didn't play NEARLY long enough. Her set flew by so quickly. And no encore! What was that? She sounded incredible, played beautifully and looked the best I've seen her. She was wearing black pants and a new white jacket that was by a certain designer, whom I've forgotten, but she mentioned him and that she was grateful she got the chance to wear it because it wasn't so hot as it's been all summer. She looked really fantastic. She opened with "Anywhere You Go", segued right into "Trouble", "Polaroids", "Shotgun Down The Avelanche", brought her old friend whom she was in a band with years ago who's now Emmylou's guitarist (and what a guitarist, too!) and they sang an old song together, I think it was called "Wide Line Fever". Then "Wichita Skyline", "I'll Be Back" (the famous Beatles cover she does), "Matter of Minutes", "Nothing Like You", "Whole New You" and she ended with "Diamond in the Rough". Not exactly sure about the order, but close to that. She wasn't nearly as talkative as she usually is, which was disapointing. I love it when she goes on and on. She said that this past week she couldn't think of anything to say, but that she warned the crowd if started she could go on and on (she didn't). One of her funniest bits was when she stated that the good news with that is the years of therapy she's been in lend her to a natural state that after 45 or 50 minutes she naturally winds down. She discussed recent gigs with Lyle Lovett and "A Streetcar Named Desire" and playing in Scotland. She also came on halfway through Emmylou's set to sing harmony on "My Baby Needs a Shepard" from Emmylou's great new disc. She got a huge welcome back reception, these people were totally digging Emmylou and Shawn singing together because they worked so flawlessly. I wished she'd stay out for more, but only the one song. She'd held the words on a sheet of paper in front of her. Overall, well, well worth the price of the tickets. Emmylou was amazing as well. But I still thought Shawn should have played longer. Hopefully next time. The other good news is that there's some new Shawn merchandise available. There are two t-shirts, one black and one white and the black one also comes in a tee. The white has a quote from "Whole New You" I think and the black one just has the cartoon version of Shawn seen on her web site and her name. There was also a cd holder with Shawn's new embroided on it. I was desperately hoping to meet Shawn, but alas, it couldn't be. Despite the rain it was a perfect show and everyone at a venue Shawn referred to as "truly one of my favorites to play" was treated to a wonderful show. Thanks so much Shawn and come back soon. ~Zach Make international calls for as low as $.04/minute with Yahoo!
