The venue is a medium sized amphitheater with a small lawn in the baxck that was perfect for an all acoustic show. The sound system for her set was perefectly tuned - helped by a quiet clear evening with 70 degree temps. Shawn's voice was in fabulous shape and every nuance was apprecaited. She was not as talkative as usual - which she blamed on an old friend from high school who was in the audience - but couldn't help but be funny and charming all the same. Her set list was similar to the one's I've read about. She opened with Anywhere You Go (new single?) and transitioned right into her catalog with You and Mons Lisa and Shotgun Down the Avalanche (the best version I've heard live). Unfortuantely Shawn had to borrow a guitar from her opening act - so she was fiddling with the strap and tuning it quite a bit which was distracting. I noticed that her acoustic guiatr arrangements were so much more complex on the older tunes which she wrote to accompoany herself. The newer stuff was backed by pretty generic chords which didn't add much to the performance. I guess this is a natural offshoot of John Levethal not Shawn providing most of the musicianship on her last couple albums. In fact - I noticed a lack of enthusiasm by Shawn about her new material. She seemed to rush through it knowing that it was a requirement - but she certaily doesn't seem to enamored with any of the songs individually. I really like the album - so I was surprised by this - and by the fact that she only played 4 (by my count) selections from the record. It's seems almost like she feels that the material is not up to her best standards. Did any of you guys get the same impression? Regardless - the show was nicely paced and very enjoyable. Most of her standards were played including: Sunny, Polaroids and Diamond in the rough which ended the standrad set. The surprise song to me was a very nice version of Wichita Skyline from a Few Small repairs. The encore tunes were both covers: I'll be Back by the Beatles and a very moving rendition of the Only Living Boy in NY - by Simon and Garfunkel. I thought the Clecveland audience was very respectful - and so did Shawn who mentioned it several times. The applause was certaily enthusiastic though - and I'm sure everyone enjoyed hearing such a talent perform outdoors on a beautiful summer evening.
