Looking round at the end, it was great to see 'everyone' in the theatre on their feet for a standing ovation. Even though I was sitting at the back of the stalls, off to the right, the band still sounded good, but it was the acoustic duets that I'll remember for a long time. So pleased to hear MCC say that it looks like they might get round to recording a duet album soon - something they've been wanting to do for quite a while, she said - and that they were using this tour to work up some ideas. For my taste, I really hope they keep this as simple as the live set - mainly acoustic, with their magical harmonies. Neil & Tim Finn's 'Four Seasons In One Day' and Lennon & McCartney's 'I'll be Back' were both stunning BUT their version of 'That's The Way Love Goes' was, for me, as good as it gets. I remember first hearing this song in a MCC video (Jubilee, I think) which includes footage of them quietly singing it on the front porch, cut with Mary Chapin talking about the first time she heard Shawn. The song is so simple and tender, with a chord change that chokes me up every time - looking down the line at my friends on Saturday night, we all laughed at each other wiping our eyes at the end. Searching the Internet on Sunday morning, I discovered this was written by Lefty Frizell http://www.dcom.net/lefty/ and Sanger D. "Whitey" Shafer http://vhost.telalink.net/~nsf/shafer.html and that Jewel and Merle Haggard have also done a duet of it - see lyrics http://easyweb.easynet.co.uk/~cmgroves/Jewel/Songs/lyrics/TTWLG.html. I'd not heard of Lefty Frizell (who died in 1975, I see) so I shall have to go hunting the record stores. This has got me thinking what other songwriters/songs I would like to hear covered by Shawn and Chapin. (Their version of Steve Earle's 'Someday' was also sublime on Saturday). Last night I went to see 'Little Feat' and they did Lowell George's 'Long Distance Love' - love that song - or how about Sandy Denny's 'The Sea' or Bruce Cockburn's 'Pacing the Cage' or Jimmy Webb's 'The Moon's a Harsh Mistress' or 'All I Know' or Jackson Browne's 'For a Dancer'? etc, etc, etc - Anybody care to take over? Whatever, hope Shawn comes back soon - good to hear her on the radio regularly at the moment - I missed the BBC interview, but Richard Allinson played 'Whole New You' again yesterday afternoon, saying at the end, "That's Shawn Colvin - we like her here!" (and I think I even heard her singing 'Viva Las Vegas' when I got in last night - over the credits of a late night film on TV - sounded like her, anyway) Paul PS Also a big big thanks to Lisa (who, I reckon, Shawn is really lucky to have in her camp) for helping set up my 'pond' interview - it was such a thrill for me to have her singing a Richard Thompson song down the phone!! http://folkmusic.about.com//library/weekly/bl_pond21_0601a.htm - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. Lately I have been also enjoying Neil Young's "Silver and Gold" which is not particularly new, but new to me, and has some beautifully simple songs and simply beautiful melodies. Not fast rock on this one. More my style!
