Here it is for those who can't get the link to work... by Mary-Chapin Carpenter I love what Shawn Colvin does. She's one of the great writers and voices in contemporary music, so it's an honour to play with her. I would say that even if she wasn't my friend. She's not the support act - it's definitely a double-header. I first heard Shawn at the Philadelphia Folk Festival in 1986. She was with a group called the Red Clay Ramblers and she stepped out to do "Shotgun Down The Avalanche", one of the most powerful songs in her canon. I was backstage when I heard her voice and I was stunned. Shawn has a gift of making someone else's song so completely her own. It's breathtaking. When I heard her do "This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)" by Talking Heads, it knocked me over. And yet it's like a double whammy, because she's also a consummate writer - you don't often see that combination. It's impossible to pick a favourite song of hers. Her new album, Whole New You, is unnervingly beautiful. "Another Plane Went Down" is great and scary. In 1997 Shawn won two Grammys for "Sunny Came Home" - Record Of The Year and Song Of The Year. That track captured something. Cool as shit. Shawn has been a lightning rod for aspiring singer-songwriters. She's a very muscular guitar player, she has a percussive gift - it's very much her own style. I go to festivals around the US and I see these twentysomething women - and men! - who are playing what sounds like Shawn Colvin music. She's definitely one of those renaissance women. She's a tri-athlete - she was a thespian before ever doing music full-time. She's done voiceovers for The Simpsons, and she has a cameo appearance as a priest in Heartbreakers, a romantic comedy starring Jennifer Love Hewitt and Sigourney Weaver. For a long time people did think we were a couple. Then there was a rumour that Shawn had dropped me for Roseanne Cash. And in the meantime she was married and I had my boyfriend. Since we did "One Cool Remove" together in 1994, a lot of people have been asking us when we're gonna make a duet record. We absolutely wanna do it. We love to sing together - we have an easy harmony with each other. We've guested on each other's albums before but we've never written together, and we have this secret list of favourites we'd love to do. We need to compare notes. Given that I'm a rehearsal junkie and she just plays it fast and loose, we'll see what happens. - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
