Guess which was harder. "The birth thing only lasted a few hours," she said by phone from New York. "But the record took a year!" Following up on her 1996 smash "A Few Small Repairs" - which included "Sunny Came Home," Grammy winner for record and song of the year - proved to be difficult not only because of the pressure to duplicate that success but also because the baby proved a distraction. It was hard for Colvin to think of anything else. "It was just one of those projects where the solutions were just not that easily found," she explained. "But we found 'em! "That has a lot to do with John Leventhal (husband of Rosanne Cash), who produced the record. He just gets better and better, and gets more and more (ideas). We started from scratch and just wrote everything together. It was really satisfying. Now it feels real good." "Whole New You" includes several songs about becoming a mommy at age 42, including "Matter of Minutes," about how her life was changed the moment Caledonia Marie was born; "Bound to You," dealing with the lifetime commitment of parenthood; and "I'd Say I'm Sorry Now," in which Colvin apologizes in advance for any parenting mistakes she may make. Among other songs on the disc are "Anywhere You Go," a sprightly pop song, and the rocking, upbeat title cut, which is also the first single. She and Leventhal experimented with new textures and styles on the album, and she tried new ways to use her voice - inspired by "One Day She'll Love Me," a song she sang with Sting on the soundtrack of Disney's "The Emperor's New Groove." "I'm really proud of that," she said. "I'm really honored that he thought I was up to the task. I have things I can do with my voice that people aren't necessarily aware of. I've always been a singer first. When I was playing tons and tons of little gigs around here in New York City or Austin (where she lives now) or other places where I've lived, I just played whatever they needed me to play. If it was country, I did that. If it was jazz, I did that. I can kind of take on any style, within reason. "Sting likes challenging melodies. And when I went to do the song, I realized there were all these little nuances of melody that I had just passed over in my head when I first got the song. And it became a challenge. So I just loved it. I loved singing with him." She also loved going to Bora Bora, in French Polynesia, to film an episode of "Music In High Places," which will air April 26 on MTV. "I'm a real nut for the tropics and the ocean," she confessed. "I think I would just like to live in the water, y'know? "It was magnificently beautiful. Bora Bora is surrounded by a barrier reef. We'd come to these spots that literally would go out a half mile and the water never went above your knees - that quintessential turquoise blue water that you imagine. "Then we'd go on a boat to a little island that couldn't have been more than an eighth of a mile in circumference - just a little island with a tree sticking out of it. You imagine yourself in a loincloth picking up a bottle with a note in it. It was a long way to go sing a few songs, but it was worth it." Also coming up soon is an appearance on "The Simpsons." On May 6, she'll reprise the role of Rachel Jordan, Christian rock 'n' roll singer, who last season comforted Ned Flanders after his wife died. "Ned kind of falls for her," Colvin revealed. "They go out on a date ... And that's all I can tell you! "To work on that show is to sit around and laugh all day. The cast, they crack each other up. I was buying that guy Matt Groening's (creator of "The Simpsons") books and stuff in 1982 at this little store underneath my apartment in New York, so I like to think I was there at the beginning." Colvin said she was looking forward to the show here because Seattle is one of her strongest markets, KMTT is one of her strongest supporters, and John Hiatt is a favorite and a friend. "And I love Train," she added. "I bought their new record (`Drops of Jupiter' on Columbia) because I like it so much. And it's on the same label as me, so I could have gotten it for free. But I wanted to encourage them, because I think they're one of the best rock bands around." - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
