Shawn played at the Fine Line on Wednesday night. It was nice to be in the company of 400+ fans who all put in the extra effort to be there on such short notice. We were all treated to a wonderful intimate show of Shawn and her guitar. It was one of those rare and special moments I'll never forget. When she came out she looked great. A cool sleeveless sweater and a long black suade skirt. With a few extra minutes before the on-air portion of the show, she played "Ricochet in Time". Beautiful! "I crawled up from the sewer For something that was truer than I intended I ended up on my knees In this big city I was befriended I transcended But I bruise my friends for more I rail at heaven's door Ricochet in time to the music You just pick a day and I'm in a new destination" After "Ricochet" the show began. The interview was fairly brief and she answered questions about the success of AFSM and Sunny. She talked about being on the Lilith Fair Tour as Sunny was gaining popularity and how funny it was to have fans flip their lighters for her hit song. When asked about Caledonia, Shawn commented that C is actually 2 3/4 and for those of us with children that age..... we would know exactly what she is like. The crowd laughed as Shawn also mentioned that Caledonia "runs the house." Shawn just had one guitar with her and many of the songs on Whole New You are in different tunings so she was concerned about taking up a lot of on-air time . She played three that must have had similar tunnings and then, once we were off-the-air, she switched her tuning and played two other songs from WNY. In this order: Anywhere You Go - on air Polaroids - on air Whole New You - on air Nothing Like You A Matter of Minutes Trouble I Don't Know Why It was such a treat I could hardly believe I was sitting there. That last one had a few of my friends all teary eyed. It was especially nice to hear acoustic versions of the WNY songs. They really become so different when simplified down to just her strong, beautiful voice and her percussive way of playing guitar. I must admit gang - I spoke with her briefly after the show and managed to spit out something stupid like "your my favorite musician and it's such a treat to have you here." All true but I had so many other things I could have asked - Basically I just froze up like a silly star struck fan - which I guess I am. It's Shawn Colvin after all .....she's amazing. It's actually the second time I've met her and am always faced with that strange awkwardness. How odd that she and her creative fruits are such a big part of our lives and yet she knows basically nothing about us. Next time I'll definitely ask her about the mouse ears. Next time:) Be well! laura - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
