Matter of Minutes (Shawn Colvin/John Leventhal) I've been thinking about you and me Maybe I was just seeing what I wanted to see You can call me crazy but you know this time I swore That I wouldn't run but I can't do that anymore I can't find my way to stay and I can't see my way to go and I can't give up without a fight I can pack myself up in a matter of minutes, leave you all far behind All of my old world and all the things in it are hard to find If they ever were mine You've been trying and I know it's been hard And I'm afraid of all this blood in my heart If there's one thing certain it's there ain't nothing for sure And I want to run but I can't do that anymore I can't meet you halfway and I can't have it my way and I can't give up without a fight I can pack myself up in a matter of minutes, leave you all far behind And all of my old world and all the things in it are hard to find All of my old world and all the things in it are hard to find Like they ever were mine I could count the good times we had on one hand All the rest were a sort of means to an end Now it's done and I can never go back to where I was before And I wanna run... I can get myself clean in a matter of minutes and get it wrong every time All of my old world and all the things in it are hard to , hard to find Everything changed in a matter of minutes And nothing was saved in time All of my old world and all the things in it are hard to find But they never never never were mine ~~~ There ya have it peoples...I am expecting you to reply to this Jenn, since you brought it up! Here are some initial thoughts about Matter of Minutes: It's one of my favorite songs on the new album! I noticed myself humming it at the grocery store the other day. When I'm humming a song almost unconsciously, there must be something about the melody, rhythm and/or lyrics that are really speaking to me on a personal level. I thought it was pretty funny since I'd only listened to it twice :) I like the slower pace of the Matter of Minutes - it really works with the lyrics and feeling I get from what she's saying. Shawn sings it the way I would expect someone to speak it in conversation - Especially that pause before "If they ever were mine" and here are some pretty heart-wrenching thoughts. . . . . . "You've been trying and I know it's been hard And I'm afraid of all this blood in my heart If there's one thing certain it's there ain't nothing for sure And I want to run but I can't do that anymore I can't meet you halfway and I can't have it my way and I can't give up without a fight." How nice to have 12 new Shawn Colvin songs to absorb. Have a nice day everyone. My favorite line is probably "Everything changed in a matter of minutes And nothing was saved in time" It's so true sometimes. Also, has anyone else been having problems posting on Shawns BBS on the website? It always tells me there is an error due to 'Kenny666'. Weird. Jenn P.S. Has anyone figured out the mystery of the rat (at least that's what I think it is) head piece thing that's on the album cover? ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! This is classic Shawn songwriting. It seems to speak of that common theme in many of Shawn's more confessional songs, the common condition of being world-weary yet steadfast in the face of disappointment, adversity, change, etc. Hearkens back to the tone of Steady On (yes, the whole album! ;-p ) and perhaps "Monopoly" from Fat City. Musically, the production on this track is appropriate and not too heavy. Her vocal harmonies are just beautiful, a touch of irony to the bittersweet lyric. Perfect. I don't want to jump ahead to other tracks, but I did want to comment on the album as a whole and see if any others had a similar sense after spending some time with WNY. I love Shawn, she still remains my absolute favorite artist, and I would probably buy an album of Callie burping if she put it out. However...I'm severely disappointed in this album. There are a few shining moments, but it mostly falls flat for me. The redeeming cuts for me are Matter of Minutes (naturally), Whole New You (nice simple pop tune), Nothing Like You, and I'll Say I'm Sorry Now. Ok, perhaps Bonefields (so-so). Although I'm definitely more of a live solo Shawn fan (her guitar-work is superb), I've also come to love the produced versions on albums as well. There's more than that missing on this collection, though. She mentioned how difficult it was to make this record, how she felt like she was coming up short, felt uninspired, wrote some "beastly songs", etc., and I think it shows. Don't get me wrong, I don't think they're *awful* songs, by any means. They just seem "beige", if you will, in comparison to her other work. This twist of lyric that gives you a twinge, the touch of heart, that profound moment of insight -- missing. I'd also have to agree with the one reviewer who commented that it feels like a Leventhal album with Shawn as the hired vocal gun. There's absolutely no "Shawn" guitar on this album -- John even plays all instruments on several of the tracks... In comparison, I simply can't get enough of the new Jonatha Brooke album, "Steady Pull". Jonatha is another artist who runs the gamut of "Songs 'O Pain" (as Lindsey or BigHair said), and I think she hit a grand slam with this album. It has the sophisticated production arrangements of "Plumb", but more rock/poppy, less jazzy. The heart/sentiment/pain/loss and YES, finally, JOY! are all there. Excellent songwriting, beautiful duet with Neil Finn, funky grooves, and still a beautiful spare solo ("Your House"). Thoughts? Feelings? Slings and arrows of outrageous (mis)fortune? I think I've always taken her voice for granted....it's beautiful.....but it was watching her play that guitar that totally floored me. (Like Dave-I too tended to be more a fan of solo Shawn (like Steady On stuff)...mostly because I was blown away at the way she played guitar. I wasn't sure I'd really love seeing/hearing her with a band. Until I did. And I loved that too. It all works...and it's a credit to her talent and material that she can pull off an outstanding show alone or with a band. One of the great things about Shawn is the way she can sing the same song twenty different ways...and make you feels like you're experiencing a whole new song. (I still can't get over her cover of "I'll Be Back Again"...what a great version of that song she does!) So, I really love seeing her with a band ...as long as I know that she'll still play solo sometimes too. ; ) On this new cd it's her voice that stands out to me. I think her vocals are outstanding here. I've always loved her voice....but WOW! As someone (cc) who I gave the cd to said - "her voice is more soothing than a massage." I loved that. Her voice sounds just AMAZING on this cd. Better than ever. (To me this cd is kind of a cross between STEADY ON and A FEW SMALL REPAIRS. I think the lyrics are more personal-or closer to Steady On type writings ....and the music is more like the A Few Small Repairs cd sound.) I'll stand in line to see S-Co play with or without a band. And luckily for us Shawn is one artist who can actually pull a solo tour off if she has to.....like say if a full band tour didn't get supported (financially). Can't say THAT about all of the artists you hear on radio today. (Many don't even play an instrument.) Sorry to ramble....but after hearing Shawn's comments on Politically Incorrect and getting a review of her California shows (where she said something about it being her last show w/the band - because she'd like to be able to pay them)....all this music biz stuff has been on my mind. I hope she gets to promote her new cd by touring with a band if that's what she wants to do. She certainly deserves that. And speaking of sponsoring a tour....I think the theme of WHOLE NEW YOU would be something the big guys like REEBOK or NIKE should pick up on and "run" with! (This comes to mind especially because it's Marathon time here in Boston - and I've been listening to all the individual stories of achievement, overcoming obstacles, etc.-especially from first time runners. "Whole New You" would be a good theme song). And hey...Shawn's an athlete. It would be a perfect fit! Please forgive this long rambling post. This is what happens when one waits a few years for their favorite artist to release new music. - -RambleOnDC - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. Some archived stills, a clip of her in her younger years, and a brief interview with her now, I think. OK to see once, but I wouldn't go out of my way to see it again.
