Despite a flat tire, a case of food poisoning, and rush hour traffic in the rain, I made it (just barely) to NYC to catch the second of Shawn's three Bottom Line shows last Wednesday. As has been mentioned, Shawn played with a full band (including horns!) and it was terrific fun and a satisfyingly long show. The arrangement of Diamond in the Rough was rockin' and Trouble works so well with a driving drum beat. Shawn also did several songs with more modest backup; the night's closer had Shawn and John Leventhal singing a wonderful cover of Gram Parson's Sin City. Shawn sang most, if not all of the new album, and any doubts I had were washed away. I can't wait to hear it. As usual, she did not hesitate to interrupt a set (or a song!) with a joke or two. The best bit had to do with Steuart Smith enjoying the fruits of fame at Lilith Fair, just don't ask him for an autograph! See y'all at the record store today! By the way, while you're there, check out Sarah Harmer's CD "You Were Here"; it's really terrific. It's the best new record I've heard in a long, long time. Sometimes it is hard to pick just one. I have to say Shawn is my absolute favorite female singer since I discovered her "Steady On" CD on April 12, 1990. Yes, I remember the date. Prior to that there was a three-way-tie between Joni Mitchell, Marti Jones, and Carly Simon's 70's work. Sorry to say, Carly's 80s & 90s stuff really fell off the radar for me; however, her albums between 1971 and 1978 were gems in my book. In the male category, I have to say my favorite singer is David Wilcox. And I mean David Wilcox the American singer from Ohio, not the Canadian singer by the same name and different musical style. Yet, I still like James Taylor's early stuff too. Jackson Browne maybe sometimes. I would love to hear Shawn and David do a song together. I know they have appeared at Telluride around the same dates a few times. Also, Mary Chapin-Carpenter appeared on Dave's "Home Again" CD. Anyway, that's my two cents. Counting down the minutes until I can get my hot little hands on my very own copy of "Whole New You." I ordered mine from Borders Book Store since they have the "exclusive" bonus track version, featuring "Fall From Rome." Hope it comes in the mail today. Happy listening! I think it's only sold by one chain of stores in the United States. Is this true? As I'm in Sweden, it will no doubt be impossible for me to get it here. Would one of the Americans on the list be interested in helping me out? I'd send the payment in advance, either cash or, if you prefer, in the form of the European edition of AFSR (with What I Get Paid For, which I gather is not on the American edition). I got the special edition at Borders today. I also watched the CNN deal. Album: It always takes me at least three times through before I even like an album, and I've only listened to it twice so far. But I really like it. I agree that the additional instrumentation is less like Steady On and Fat City than I'd like. But right now, it's commercial appeal that she needs. I think she accomplishes this, while maintaining her artistic integrity pretty well. After MIHP, I was happy to hear "Nothing Like You" and "Anywhere You Go" with more production. It was nice to hear them differently. CNN Appearance: Shawn looked - uh - a bit natural. And a bit uncomfortable. But the interviewer was very non-real, so I think that might have had something to do with it. She started to play a song with her guitar, but they cut it off after about 20 seconds and that was the end of that. I don't even know what song it was, because I hadn't heard the CD yet and she didn't get to the chorus. But it's commercial exposure, and I'll take that any day for one of my favorite artists! I'm on "One Small Year", so I can't speak for the other 2 songs (I got the Borders edition- yay!) but so far it's okay... very slow. From what I'd heard, I'd expected it to be very upbeat and poppy, but it really isn't. Okay, now I'm on "I'll Say I'm Sorry Now". I like it. So far my favorites are probably Bonefields (I still wish that's what she'd named the album!), Whole New You, I'll Say I'm Sorry Now, and Mr. Levon. I still don't get the weird album art with that rat (I think that's what it is) mask/ headpiece thing.. to strange. Intersting... I love the black and white thing where they like, stacked the pictures on top of each other... JMO. Don't forget to set the VCR's (or just stay up!) for Leno tonight!!!! I have a hard time forming an initial impression based on just one listen, but I will try. :) It is darker than I thought it would be, which gets a big thumbs up from me! Like Jean, I am all about Songs O Pain. I don't dislike a single track, though Roger Wilco is a bit strange. It will probably grow on me, though. My favorites are Nothing Like You, Another Plane Went Down, Bound To You, and I'll Say I'm Sorry Now. I'd say the lyrics are awesome in most of the songs. I do kind of yearn for a more simple production for a few songs (like Another Plane Went Down), but overall I like the production. I am not sure how to compare this one to her other albums...it definitely is in its own category. hmm...listening to it again, I also like Anywhere You Go quite a bit too.
