It is a tie, however! Dead of the Night (though I have never heard it live) & Shotgun Down the Avalanche. As a songwriter, Shawn is one of my greatest inspirations. Along with Joni Mitchell. And some of the lyrics (particularly on Fat City) she writes are amazing. I've never seen her in concert (I've promised myself I will on this tour, if she actually gets to within 300 miles of Wichita, KS). I think that Dar Williams is at least as good of a lyricist. I have seen Dar in concert, and she's great. She does seem to perform with a lot of physical tension tho... Catie Curtis is awsome, Jonatha Brooke, Jennifer Kimball, Patty Larkin (perhaps the finest instrumentialist/guitar player I've seen in a long time), and for guys... Bruce Cockburn. I could go on and on and on as her talent has brought so much joy to my life :) "Kill the Messenger" is a favorite song for many of the previously mentioned reasons. As so many of us share similar taste I trust you may enjoy some of my other favorites. I've recently been listening to Ron Sexsmith and look forward to seeing him live! Peter Mayer from Minneapolis is another musician I'm always amazed by. I'd also like to recommend another band "The Honeydogs," also out of Minneapolis, and their new album "Here's Luck"- They've just started their tour, have been getting wonderful press and put on a great live show. Cheers to you all as we enjoy wonderful new music. Laura >I think Shawn is one of the finest vocalists.
