Well, more than one year later than mentioned (not promised), Shawn returns. As a Londoner, not by birth, the choice of venue is a shame. In my personal opinion, The Hammersmith Apollo is the worst venue I have ever had the displeasure to attend. It is a barn, with the acoustics of The Grand Canyon. It's not that it's just big, it's just lousy.(slamming doors, background noise etc.) The last time I was there was for Emmylou Harris' gig and, as fine as a performer that she is, there is no use playng in a venue with the acoustics of a cave. (also Indigo Girls and that was it, the venue was so bad). Fortuntately, EH decided a few months later to play much more intimate gigs, three nights in a row. When MCC played the Lyric in Hammersmith, you had to applaud her, as she was playing a relatively small venue which had not had the experience of a musical artiste playing there. I hope that SC or /and MCC decide to play more intimate gigs when they're over here. I'm not trying to be a pain in the ass, but The H App is just wrong. While the British Public is so onside with (female acoustic) singers***, it would be a shame that numbers supersede quality. Some may argue that numbers is the priority (H Apollo), but if it is not memorable, then they don't convert. Please Lisa, by all means play the venues that have been booked, but sort some others out. ***Radio 2 has helped (if not made happen) Eva Cassidy's album become (justifiably) number one over here. This shows there is a receptive audience. Concentrate on them. If you wish, email me directly about certain commercial radio shows. It is about time that people made use of the new/traditional media streams in the UK to alert people to new music, not just go for big numbers a la Hammersmith Apollo. No promises, but, I believe I am in the position to pester a lot more these days. Do you know The Jazz Cafe now streams media for select gigs (along the lines of HOB.com), so while you're placating me (and keeping my mouth firmly shut) then Shawn's loyal fans (as stated in Billboard) can see/hear a bit more of the artist they have been longing to see for years. (Or are Sony/Columbia going to try to stop that as they did with Music In High Places). It's not that it's just big, it's just lousy.(slamming doors, > background noise etc.) It's not the *worst* I've been to, but I agree with the sentiment Neil. I live just north of London, but I'll probably be going to the Birmingham gig. I've only been to one gig there, but Birmingham Symphony Hall, big though it is, is everything that Hammersmith Apollo isn't. And the acoustics are absolutely stunning. > When MCC played the Lyric in Hammersmith, you had to applaud her, as she was > playing a relatively small venue which had not had the experience of a > musical artiste playing there. Been to a few acoustic gigs there that have been ruined by the people eating \ chatting upsatirs. Bloomsbury Theatre would work well for Shawn, I reckon. Mary Chapin has always commented on what a fantastic venue it is when she has played it, as have others including Emmylou Harris, Trisha Yearwood and Bruce Springsteen. If you see one show on this tour then this is the place to go.
