Based on your description, that was surely Hickory Wind>> This is DEFINITELY the song. Good call you two! I especially remember this verse: It's a hard way to find out that trouble is real In a far away city, with a far away feel But it makes me feel better each time it begins Callin' me home, hickory wind It's always good to hear shawn perform something new. Thanks to everyone for the nice emails; it really is fun for me to write reviews -- finding the time proves a little more challenging, but it's always my pleasure. On a non-shawn note, i've recently run across something that has given me great pause... i ran across an article by Courtney Love, that..... [major hesitation]... that i actually *agree* with. Yes, it was a very eye-opening article about major record labels sucking artists dry and leaving them in major debt. One of my favorite groups, November Project, (formerly known as prince, er... i mean, October Project) has recently asked their fans for help in funding their next CD. Happy to oblige, i went to their website to see what i could do, and read the article by courtney that is linked at their site. Immensely curious, i had to see what it was all about. It was a very moving article - and made me wonder if Shawn ever faced such trials with Sony in the years that she wasn't selling a bajillion records like her Sony cohorts. I'd always heard that the music business wasn't as glamorous as we are led to believe, but what courtney revealed seems as if it could almost be illegal! eek! i'd like to know what some of you guys think about the article especially Hans-Jürgen if you are still out there! I assume that perhaps Shawn's new position as a popular female artist has secured her position with her label, but it is amazing all the people that have had to declare bankruptcy bcz of the debt owed to their labels, or those who have been dropped without so much as a hint that they were gonna get canned. Is shawn really immune? here is the link, if you are interested: www.novemberproject.com read about the album project, the demise of october project, and courtney's article under the section, "Why Help?" interesting stuff. ~bH now playing: Loreena Mckennitt - The Visit Loreena Mckennitt - Mask & Mirror Loreena Mckennitt - Parallel Dreams Loreena Mckennitt - Book of Secrets - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. Of course, I don't think that a conclusion on whether or not it's ethical is going to be of much practical importance. I think that at this point, it's pretty inevitable that music will be exchanged freely via computers, and I definately agree with Courtney that the larger injustice is middlemen in the music industry. Napster is an extension of the illegal distribution of music that's been going on for a long time, by tapes or CD burners. Most all stereos come with two tape decks. Since you can't listen to two tapes at once, I'd say that that's a pretty large implicit support of illegal copying. Napster may have made this easier and more widespread, but it certainly isn't a new moral issue. As someone who appreciates indepedent artists and realizes that this is how most of them make a living, I will buy a CD that I truly love, rather than a)get it from the library and tape a copy b) get a friend to burn me a CD copy from theirs or c)download the whole thing from Napster and then burn it onto a CD. I also try to buy either directly from the artist or from a local, independent business rather than support large corporations. What Courtney wrote of certainly fits a pattern of conglomerate corporations exploiting producers, whether those producers be garment workers in Malaysia, rock stars in New York, or dairy farmers in the Midwest. - --Anna p.s.-- this could certainly be a contentious enough issue to get us all talking again. Let's all try to keep the discussion civil, though! - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
