Good one - tough, though. It's been bugging me for the last couple of days so here's a stab at a few, at least - 1. Sting - 'Fragile' "Perhaps this final act was meant To clinch a lifetimes argument That nothing comes through violence and nothing ever could For all those born beneath an angry star Lest we forget how fragile we are" 'Fields of Gold' would be good too, Kay. Eva Cassidy's version was wonderful - - not heard Mary Black's version on her latest album yet) 2. Tom Waits - What's He Building in There? (just kidding! get out of this house!) - my favourites, 'Rosie' or 'I Hope That I Don't Fall in Love with You' - would probably not be appropriate for Shawn to sing. 3. Greg Brown - 'Small Dark Movie' not too familiar with his work, but like this 4. Willis Alan Ramsey - 'That's Right (You're Not from Texas)' (this one, written with Lyle Lovett and Alison Rogers, is the only other song of his that I've heard - like this one, though 5. Judee Sill - Crayon Angels "Magic rings I made Have turned my finger green And my mystic roses died Guess reality is not as it seems So I sit here hoping for truth And a ride to the other side" - - just about any Judee Sill song would suit me fine - bless the Ridge Rider - shame she's not still around. 6. Roly Salley ? 7. T Littlefield ? 8. Steve Earle - 'I Aint Ever Satisfied' 9. Robbie Robertson - 'Broken Arrow' "Who else is gonna bring you A broken arrow Who else is gonna bring you A bottle of rain" 10. Jimmy Webb - 'All I Know' I heard Jimmy say that he wrote this (in a hotel overlooking Hyde Park in London) for an 'English rose' who he'd fallen for - he invited her back to the hotel and got her to sit down next to him on the piano stool whilst he played it to her - at the end she just said primly "Don't be silly!" 11. David Byrne, T. Weymouth, C. Frantz, J. Harrison - 'Psycho Killer' (fa fa fa fa fa - just kidding!!) - give up (maybe 'Take Me to the River') 12. Bob Dylan - 'I Don't Believe You' "And if anybody asks me, 'Is it easy to forget? I'll say, "It's easily done, You just pick anyone, And pretend that you never have met!" My best shot, for now Paul - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. I enjoyed reading your selections and agreed with the ones I knew---there's a lot of Dylan, Jimmy Webb and Sting that Shawn's voice would be fantastic on. There's a Tom Waits song that's out and it's pretty discreet as far as I know--it's called "Martha"--and I think Shawn would do a great job on it. Tom's version isn't incredible, but years ago Bette Midler did a version of it on Saturday Night Live (it was 1979) that was so amazing. She also did some minor lyric adjusting to make sure a woman could sing it--but Shawn has that depth of emotion that she could make the song something. As Shawn herself has said, she's a slow writer, so maybe a cover album in between original writing projects isn't an entirely out of the realm possibility. We will love anything she gives us! ~Zach __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
