The stage was set up in the front of a large tent, and behind the tent there is lawn seating, where people were eating gourmet food (not me) on blankets, etc. Steve Forbert, an old buddy of Shawn's from her Greenwich Village days opened. This was a surprise because this wasn't advertised. The people around us were pretty rude, and while his singing voice carried above the chatter, I couldn't understand what he was saying between songs. I began to fear that this would happen when Shawn came on. I enjoyed his set, because I was familiar with his music, but some people I was with thought that all his songs sounded similar, as he has a certain way of squeezing out the words when he sings. After a break, Shawn came out, and the crowd did quiet down. After two songs, she began to chat, and chat and chat. She even commented that she might not get to sing any more songs at that rate. There were more stories about Sting. When she opened for Sting recently she decided to do "Every Little Thing He Does is Magic." The New Jersey audience "didn't get it." She followed that with "Sunny" and they still didn't "get it." The next night she dropped the Sting song. The following night she wasn't going to do the song again. Sting asked if she was going to do it and when she said "no," he said he liked it when she did the song. She went on about Sting and his Jaguar commercial and told a joke about the copy in that commercial and related it to a Pop-Up Video reference. Her husband and daughter had just flown back home and she realized that she had this new freedom----the ability to stay up late for a change, even though she is usually tired. People kept shouting out requests, and she made the comment that it's nice to have all these songs to choose from now. In the old days she only had 10 songs. Even, though she has made several appearances in this area in the last 4 years, she had trouble remembering some of the towns where she played, and said she's really bad with geography. She did recall that when she was in the Buddy Miller Band, they played at a place in Roslyn called "U.S. Something," and the audience filled in the correct name: U.S. Blues. You can tell that she's really into movies, and talked about Cary Grant and the Glen Cove Police Station (nearby) in North By Northwest. She did her Slingblade thing in "Shotgun" and performed a total of 16 songs, including 3 encores and more stories. I'd say the songs were pretty well distributed among her various CD's. Two of the songs were new, both very likeable upon first listening. No names were given, and I didn't pay attention to the content. The first song she had performed 3 or 4 times, and the second song, which had some tricky guitar work was being done for the first time and she thanked the crowd for their indulgence. Listen for the polished copy on the CD, she said. I saw her 3 weeks before at Battery Park and had been disappointed that there were no new songs. I guess she's making progress toward the new CD. Like I said, it was a great night for an outdoor event, even requiring jackets as the evening progressed. Her voice floated clearly thru the cool air, and the evening was capped off with I Don't Know Why--first time I've heard her perform this song and this was my 6th time seeing Shawn. I don't know why so many people started to pack up their folding chairs and blankets and leave before the last couple of tunes---very rude--but I had a great time.
