Michele Winery, Woodinville WA Where to begin? It was wonderful, of course. How could it not be? It's SHAWN. :) Anna and I went with the gals that do the house concerts around here, and it was funny how many regulars of those concerts we saw-- we formed a little section called for the Whidbey House Concert Goers. So I was too lazy to write down a set list, but I will try to remember as much as I can. Shawn played first, followed by Chapin (Shawn came on stage with Chapin a few times during Chapin's set), and then there was a nice lengthy encore set that they played together. Shawn's set (probably not in the correct order): Fearless Heart Trouble Wichita Skyline Polaroids Shotgun Down the Avalanche (with Sling Blade) Every Little Thing The Facts About Jimmy You and the Mona Lisa Climb On Diamond in the Rough (closing song) Shawn talked a lot during her set; she was hilarious as always. Near the beginning of her set she was talking about how she had just slept on a bus (Chapin's) for the first time in about a year on her way to the concert. She said she had been really psyched, that they were gonna watch movies and eat a lot and just have a good time. Well, they started Goodfellas, started eating, and apparently half-way through the movie Shawn was the only one still awake! Poor girl, I can identify with that. She said she'd eaten all this chocolate, and everyone was passed out besides her. And she still wanted to do more! But there was nothing to do. She also talked a little about Sting (she got interrupted by something, though, and said "No, nevermind. Forget it. Forget about our torrid affair.") She said that Callie was doing fine, that she's almost two and just slept through the night for the first time last week. She said that she didn't think Callie was born to be a baby, that it pissed her off. Now that she can walk and talk and boss people around she's a lot happier. Hmm, what else...well, she broke a string tuning and had to borrow one of Chapin's guitars. She sang a line of "This Shirt" ala Chapin, in honor of her. All in all her voice sounded great, she was great of course! She was in a pretty mellow mood during her set. Oh yeah, she talked about the triathalon too, and how she took part in it cuz she's making a record and wanted to run away. :) No new songs, though. Ok, onto Chapin's set: I really don't know the names of a lot of the songs she played; a lot of them were new. So I'm gonna skip the set list for her. Chapin seemed to be in a good mood, her voice was sounding great and strong. Her band was top-notch as always: John Jennings, Duke Levine, and Jon Carroll. I must admit that I was distracted for a lot of her set by Shawn, who was sitting at the edge of the grass damn close to where we were sitting (she was talking to some friends of hers, I guess-- we would've gone over and said hi, but there were friendly security officers just casually standing around her...hmm :) ). Now onto the best part, the encores! I lost track of how many times we got them to come back; they played a ton of weird stuff together. I tell you, it was definitely the best part of the concert, watching them interact with each other. You can tell how close they are, and how much they enjoy each other's company (here's a new prize for weirdest rumour I heard: one of the women who went to the concert with me and Anna said to us later (about Shawn and Chapin): "Do you think they're having an affair?" More of our concert companions mentioned that they'd spoken to someone about this as well, but had heard that they weren't-- I say, that's even better than the Jackson Browne rumour!). But anyway. The first song they played together for the encore (I think) was If I Were a Diva. Talk about hilarious! Chapin sung, and Shawn pantomimed. Her Shania impression was to die for. I'd try to describe it, but you just had to see it. Too funny. Let's see, I'll try to list what else they sung: Someday One Cool Remove (awesome!!) He Thinks He'll Keep Her (as Chapin said, "Right!") I Take My Chances That's the Way Love Goes (Shawn said, "Chapin really loves this one. It really gets her.") I'm not sure what this one it's called, it's the song that goes "So if you really love me, come on and let it show" Quittin Time (slow version-- beautiful with Shawn's harmonies) And one that I'd never heard before (could be one of Chapin's new ones, I guess) that was really beautiful..."Going Home" or something like that (I think they were trying to send us a message, this was the last song they played) I *think* that's everything, though I may have missed some. Very full show; I think that they were having a great time and I know that the audience was having a great time. They said that someday they were gonna do an album together. (Shawn said, "Yeah, and it's gonna be called Chapin and Shawn do the Sex Pistols.") Well, I may have missed something, but I think this review has gotten very long, so I will end here. If you get a chance to see these two together, take it! They are just awesome, and play off each other incredibly. It's just something you have to see for yourself. ~lindsey :) np: Live '88, Shawn Colvin (nonstop-- I think I'm already in concert withdrawals) Little Voice, Nicole Campbell October Project (self-titled) Apartment 12, Karen Pernick (whom we saw in the audience at the show) - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. For the concert I just reviewed, I forgot to include a rundown of how everyone was looking! How could I forget such a thing? Shawn, I have to say, was looking just great, totally in shape and lean. I even pretty much liked her outfit (you know with Shawn it can be hit and miss). She was wearing a light, kind of minty-green ensemble...a kind of dress that went below her knees over loose pants of the same color. Her hair was light-red. Chapin was wearing a yellow sweatshirt (I always admire someone with the courage to wear yellow-- Lord knows I can't pull it off!) and jeans. Her hair was blond, of course, and a little past shoulder-length. So, I don't know why I thought that was so important to post (probably has something to do with me finding reasons to put off finishing up that job application :) ), but there you have it! And to all a good day. :) ~lindsey - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. Hell, we still talk about Painter Stalker Guy now and again, and that whole deal happened way long ago. Hee hee. Although, I heard recently that it was in fact Bonnie Raitt who hooked up with Jackson Browne...this gal at a house concert I was at was talking about the supergroup tour, and how it was after that that "Bonnie Raitt left her husband and started seeing Jackson Browne."
