Whilst it's a little quiet around here sometimes, in my very short time on the list, I've noticed that the people on here are quality. None more so, in my opinion, than Rob Love, who, just because he wanted to, has sent me a copy of the recent Joni Mitchell tribute. What can I say, other than a very big 'thank you', Rob. Unable to wait to do the necessary format transfer, I watched it in all its NTSC glory. The sound is OK but the picture flickers like mad and gives a split-screen effect of the same picture three times, one on top of each other. And can you believe that I sat and watched the whole show like this. Whilst by the end, my brain felt like it had experienced a two hour strobe attack at some rave, I so enjoyed the music, it was well worth it. As anyone who has ever tried to sing a Joni song will know, it is not an easy to thing to do. Those songs are so locked in to her particular phrasing, rhythmic patterns and open tuning colours that as soon as you change any of those elements to try and make it your own, the vital ingredient seems lost. Now you imagine having to then perform your arrangement in front of Joni herself and a huge live audience with millions watching on TV. I shall avoid all the toilet humour that such an experience would probably induce in me! Being a fan, I was thrilled by Shawn's performance and Joni's apparent reaction when they first walked out on stage, even if my picture was flickering about all over the place in triplicate. Our lass has come a long long way since the early Fast Folk days and to see her up there amongst some of the world's very greatest musicians made me feel very proud. "I can pick 'em", I mumbled to myself. My best to you all Paul PS. As UK comedian Ali G would say, "Big it up for Rob!! - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body.
