Of course her tour is no where near me so I wont' be able to see her live anytime soon. :( Just a few comments... the girl looked AWESOME... she's back into BUFF shape and for once, she wore an outfit I would actually want to go out and buy. (altho I don't think I could pull it off as well). Shawn has the tendancy to make me cringe with her clothes sometimes. :) Also.. loved her and Chapin together... I just wish that we could've heard Shawn solo for a bit. It would've been nice to hear her sing an entire song, herself. but... I'm not going to complain... it was just awesome to see Shawn! it's been awhile. She was awesome! I also thought Diana Krall and KD were awesome, too... I'm not a fan... or at least I wasn't til that show. They kind of blew me away. Well... that's my 2-cents... Just SO happy to see Shawn again... I've missed her! Take care all. Everyone should get to see this great evening of music. - ----- Original Message ----- From: To: Sent: Thursday, April 13, 2000 1:27 PM Subject: [s-r] Joni Mitchell Tribute > Hi All, > > FYI (for U.S. folks only I guess, sorry everyone else!), the Joni Mitchell > Tribute airs this Sunday night on TNT. I loved Cyndi Lauper's version of Carey. 2. I loved Richard Thompson's version of Black Crow. 3. I loved Cassandra Wilson's version of the Joni-Mingus tune. 4. I ABSOLUTELY, POSITIVELY loved Chapin's and Shawn's version of Amelia. 5. Greg Leisz (the steel player) never, ever fails to impress me as the best musician that not enough people have heard of and he should be even more famous than he is. 6. Is Kate Mosowitz (back-up singer for James Taylor and Shawn) the best or what? 8. I loved Tony Bennett's (a painter himself) discussion of Joni's artwork. 7. It was great to see all those folks do those other songs, but really, aren't Joni 's version better? (please no flames-I don't intend to disparage any of those performers, including Chapin and Shawn, For example, I don't think Woodstock is one onf Joni's better songs; her performance of the song is what makes it great. Having Richard Thompson do that song was a waste when there are many other songs of Joni's where he could have displayed his acoustic guitar playing abilities to demonstrate the complexities of Joni's songwriting. And BTW, this is no knock on Woodstock-I went, was one of maybe three people who didn't get high, but did go swimming naked, so I don't want anyone to think I'm some kind of weird freak, and did love the music.) 8. And didn't Larry Klein just do a wonderful job putting together a great band and making great arrangements of the tunes that were played? 9. And there aren't 11 more questions to make this a 20 questions segment. I think the only two that really transcended this for me were "Amelia" and "A Case of You." In those cases, I don't think the covers were better or worse than the originals-- but they were damn good, good enough that I stopped thinking "well Joni sang it differently." All in all, a good night of music, me thinks. :) ~lindsey np: Rebecca Riots (an excellent group of three women, kinda reminiscent of the Indigo Girls, but definitely their own style-- visit their website at www.rebeccariots.com to hear some of their songs) (no, i didn't get paid to give that endorsement! :) ) - ------------------------------------------------------------------------ To unsubscribe from the list send mail to majordomo@smoe.org with 'unsub scribe small-repairs' in the message body. BUT I did get to see Chapin live in person last night. Her first time in Australia for 10 years, God love her! I wish I'd been a fan when she was here last time with Lucinda Williams and Roseanne Cash (dammit). I was kind of hoping that in amongst her chit chat between songs that she might have some stories to tell about the Joni thing.... and I was armed and ready to express some loud verbal appreciation if there was any mention of Shawn's name, but sadly it didnt come up, so the people around me were saved from being deafened and my friend I dragged with me was saved the embarassment :) Shame tho. However, said friend had never heard Chapin before (or heard OF her for that matter) and he *loved* the show, so we have a new convert. Now if we could just get Shawn back down here (hello Lisa, o well connected AGF one! ;) no pressure mate!) I can get him hooked on her too.... One more NSC thing - I managed, amongst a few others, to talk briefly to Chapin after the show - someone asked why she didnt do The Bug and Twist & Shout etc etc (she had minimal band with her... just John Jennings and John Carroll on piano) and I brazenly piped up with "how about 'If I Were A Diva'?" and she laughed and said something like "yeah... we werent too sure how well that would go down here..." Its lucky I lost her attention to someone else at that point or she would have had to cope with me laughing in her face and saying "are you KIDDING me???!!" :) She clearly is not well acquainted with the aussie sense of humour and needs to get back here more often to remedy that..... ;) OK, thats about all I can conjure up to contribute. I'll leave the rest to the folks on Chapin's list and those of you here who have actual Shawn content... So. if you missed it, check your local listings and set that VCR. I, too, thought the outstanding song of the show was Amelia, with Shawn and MCC.
